I received a letter telling me that I was the 3rd prize winner for the annual readers Digest Sweepstake and that my winnings would amount to a total of $65,000. There was a check enclosed in the envelope for $3,056.75 which they said was to cover handling, insurance, duties and tax fees.
The only number listed in the letter was that of "Michael Phillips" Director of Claims 514-574-7153. When I called that number a French-speaking message came up. I looked on the Internet and called another number for Readers Digest Claim Services and , again, a French-speaking message came up.
The $3056.75 check was drawn on Chase Manhattan Bank, New York, NY and was from Diebold Financial Services Inc.,5995 Mayfair Road, North Canton, Ohio 44720. I have not looked this company up to see if it really exists yet.

Even though the author of this report listed Reader's Digest in the title of this thread, they had nothing to do with this incident. Scammers will use the names of established and well-known organizations such as Reader's Digest, Safeway, Pepsi Cola, Hallmark, etc...
Instead of focusing on whatever name the scammers are using, it's important to focus on how the scam works. In short, if you receive a letter that says you won a lottery or sweepstakes that you haven't entered and AND you receive a check with instructions to forward the money to someone else, it's a scam.

Don't waste any more time "looking things up" about this. It's a scam. If you get through to someone they will very likely tell you to moneygram some money to someone in Canada-that's the current version of this type of scam.
Once you send them any funds-they vanish and your money is gone.
Toss the thing in the trash. You didn't win anything.
