We contacted Reno Sunrooms at the end of April 2013 in hopes of installing a sun room on our condo. Our main concern was depositing several thousand dollars and being rejected by the HOA (as we had several instances in the past of getting HOA rejection over much more minor projects). We were assured that if the HOA rejected us, our deposit would be refunded in full. The HOA did reject us, and I fought this for three months to no avail.

My husband and I then decided to buy a house, and requested for Reno Sunrooms to give us an estimate for our sun room there. We agreed to the terms and signed an addendum to the original contract, assuming we were operating under the same terms of receiving our deposit back if this HOA rejected us. Unfortunately, the second HOA rejected us as well, due to a lack of neighbor consent for the project. I fought this as well, submitting another appeal which was turned down.

We were told by an employee that the materials had already been ordered and it was too late to turn back, so we assumed our deposit would be lost. We then found out the materials actually had not been ordered. We were upset as we felt the employee misrepresented the extent of the project, so in accordance with our original promise, we asked the owner for a full refund. It took over two months to finally receive partial repayment of our deposit, with almost 30% of our funds not being returned.

When I spoke with the owner about this (and my complaints of his employee being dishonest), he assured me his employee was not a liar and could have just made a mistake. Regardless, it does not change the fact we were promised our full refund back at our initial meeting if these circumstances arose. Unfortunately, the owner whole-heartedly felt he was being more than fair with his reimbursement. My husband and I have a different idea of fairness: we simply want what we were promised at our first transaction.

I believe that if we had received HOA approval, our business with Reno Sunrooms would have been pleasant with no problems. I do not believe this company is intentionally trying to scam customers or mislead them (we are the first customers to be rejected by an HOA). However, I simply do not agree that their actions were fair in this case, as the owner believes. I would caution people who are considering using their services, especially if HOA approval is needed.
