A week ago I filled up my tank with $20.00 worth of gas at the Safeway Fuel Station in Laveen, AZ. I charged my debit lard at the pump and was on my way. A day later I noticed a $120.00 charge to my account that I did not make, but according to Safeway policy they are allowed to hold $100 extra from your account. This caused me checkings account to go into overdraft for $35.00 because I did not have that much money in my account. I live on a very limited income of only $600 a month and every penny is used for bills. A day later I was hit with another $35.00 because my electric bill went through. I tried to argue with the bank about this, but they said it was basically not their fault. They told me it was Safeways doing and that it was basically my responsbility to make sure I had the money in my account. First of all I don't think I have ever had that money in my account within the last year and second of all why should I get penalized for something Safeway did? I think credit unions are in bed with Safeway because it allows them to force peoples accounts to go into overdraft. I am sure I am not the only person this has happened to. My household spends over $500.00 a month in groceries at Safeway  and this is what I get for it. Putting gas in my tank is not only a neccessity it is a way I make a living because I am a courier who uses my own car. Companies like Safeway want to slap their customers in the face for supporting them.

Consumer 1, this website is not for asking questions it is for filing complaints so therefore I did not "forget" to ask a question. Second of all if Safeway wants to hold an extra $100.00 from peoples accounts with disregard to their actual finanical situation knowing full well that some people may go into overdraft then it is stealig.  I was refunded back for my $100.00,but not for the extra $70.00 that my bank charged me in overdraft fees.... my next paycheck paid for that. I have been using my pin at gas pumps for years and I have never had a problem with holding more than I charged.

" I live on a very limited income of only $600 a month"   " My household spends over $500.00 a month in groceries at Safeway.."

Does that mean you have  less than $100/month left for ALL your other bills?  Boy, that's really living close.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

It is the "policy" of almost ANY gasoline retailler to put a temporary hold on an account...

AUTHOR: Ken - ()

to assure the money will be there when the amount is withdrawn.  The different retaillers hold different amounts, so that, in their estimation, you won't write checks or use your card further and they come up short.  I don't EVER use my debit card to buy gas for that and the possiblity of a "skimmer" stealing my card information.  Safeway did NOT Rip you off. The hold will be credited back, usually in 2-3 days.
