After years of being a customer of Ameritech, only due to the telephone monopoly they once had in Michigan. I could not stand the Customer service. I had a few financial problems and outrageous phone bills. I downgraded my services multiple times only to be charged far more than I should have been.

Will outrageous phone bills with hardly any luxuries. I called Ameritech to find out why the bills were so high, and to make payment arrangements. I was talked down to on the phone the rep was very rude and not helpful at all.

Luckily, there are more options in phone companies these days, so I changed my phone service. I am alot happier for the time being, I quess I will have to see what the future holds for My current carrier MCI.

I got a call today from Ameritech regarding my last phone bill that is due upon receipt. I did return that call, But not with good response. They claim that in order to make arrangments you must do that over the phone, I guess so it can be he said she said. I requested they give me a address to correspond to.

I would rather do the arrangments in writing. The rep tells me they have no address for correspondence, therefore I would be required to handle this matter over the phone. I tell the rep that it is immpossiable to run any business without having some type of snail mail address. I request to speak with her supervisor.

The supervisor returned my call. She was very unprofessional aswell. She informs me that I either make arrangments over the phone or they will put my bill in collections. So I told her I would be more than happy to make arrangments on the bill.

But I would like to do it in writing, therefore I would need her to accomidate me with a address for the proper correspondence. She would not give me the address. So I asked for the address to the Corporated office. Her reply was I am not going to give that out and you will not find it, even if you tried. I told her to kiss my a**(well you know I was ticked.)

Well, I got off the phone with her and had the address within seconds thanks to the BBB. I will still send my arrangments through the mail, if they want their money.

It has been reported, when there are thousands of complaints and other investigations underway by authorities, the BBB has no choice but to finally give an UNsatisfactory rating to a BBB member business that is paying the BBB big membership fees every year. When a business is reported that is NOT a BBB member, BBB files WILL more likely show an UNsatisfactory rating, then reportedly shake down that company to become a member of the BBB. One positive thing about the BBB is, either way, if a business has an unsatisfactory rating with the BBB, you can be sure, the business is bad. But what about all those BBB member businesses that had complaints filed against them? Consumers never get to hear about them. What about the BBB advertising to the public? Is this a false and misleading perception they are giving about consumer confidence when dealing with a business? #8 UPDATE EX-employee responds

In response to SBC's charges

AUTHOR: Andrea Hicks - (U.S.A.)

Hello,
I used to work at SBC, in the Customer Care Center. One reason your first bill is so high, is because they bill 1 month in advance.

Actually, a lot of companies do the same. I don't like it either but, it's how their system is set up. So, what you're actually getting is a bill for your immediate service and the month upcoming. After you pay your first bill, your bill should be close to what they told you it would be when you first hooked up.

You said they didn't do any hook-up/wiring in the house for you...that's good. They charge a VERY hefty fee for internal wiring. They do still however, charge an initial hook-up fee just to turn both of your services on. Basically, those are processing fees and many customers refer to it as "hitting a switch." Yep, that's a pricey switch to hit.

The only thing I can say, is that since I've workef for a phone company...I have BASIC service. Yep, it stinks to not have those 'extras' but those extras cost EXTRA.

There are already enough fees on your bill every month so why add more that you may not even use much. I don't have call-waiting, caller-id, DSL ( I use highspeed dial-up), or anything that will "feed their greed." They will offer enticing promotions but you're better off not getting them.

I even go as far as to have all the FREE BLOCKS for the Pay-per-use options on my phone. I don't want them saying someone must of used them, so I save myself the hastle. As a consumer, people need to look at their bills and they need to DEMAND an explanation of all of them so they won't get confused down the road. If you don't like how one rep explains it, demand another rep.

It's your service and unfortunately, we as customers have to ensure that we're being given competent service by being informed.

Good luck to you.

I AM BEING RIPPED OFF TOO ..they are way out of line & GREEDY!

I dont know what to do. I am petrified after getting my first SBC internet and phone bill.
I just moved to San Antonio and have experienced terrible service with SBC.

They are horrible! AND NOW THIS!

I just got a bill from them for $ 234.00 for my first month of internet and phone service???
I have NEVER paid this kind of money before!
It makes no sense!

I had a company in the last city I lived at where they came out installed everything and was billed for DSL for $ 26.5 a month. And my phone bill was around maybe $ 50.00.

How does one get $ 234.00? I even had to pay
$ 75.00 for an independent guy to come out and hook up all of the crap they sent to us. So they didnt even come out and do ANYTHING!

It think this is a total rip off and they are way out of line & GREEDY!

Please advise - what do I do? See an attorney? call the TV news station and report them or what?
