Senior Healthcare Consultants/RJR Insurance SHC - Bad news for Agents and Consumers! Dallas Texas

SCH promises a lucrative career providing Medicare Supplement insurance to senior citizens. The key to their recruitment practice is the promise of 4-5 "preset appointments" each day. This companies recruitment practices are of the "Churn 'em and burn 'em" variety. My experience with SHC was a chain of out of pocket expenses, deception, broken promises, and half truths:

1. I paid $299 up front to join the organization. For this I got two binders filled with photocopies and 25 business cards. I was supposed to get an ID Badge, which is part of their "pitch", but after one month I never received it, even though prospect were instructed not to admit me without it.

2. Before starting, I was required to pay $149 for a licensing course; $75 for testing and fingerprinting; and to purchase a web cam ($85) and headset with microphone ($25).

3. I was promised 3 days of web based training followed by two days in the field with an experienced agent, but when the time came, I was told that they couldn't guarantee when I could could be placed on the "training schedule"if I insisted on field training, but I could start right away if I'd agree to web based training only, which I did.

4. The web based training focused solely on the presentation or pitch ( with fully 17% devoted to their ranch in Texas, complete with a powerpoint presentation) I was given no product knowledge or information, which I was expected to acquire on my own. Given the complexities of Medicare and the number of competing products, this made the "training" a joke.

5. The "preset appointments" were a joke as well. Even though I was charged $18 for each appointment,VERY FEW of the appointments I was sent on had any actual desire to see me. I was sent mostly into economically depressed areas, and many "prospects" avoided the appointments by leaving their homes, and far too many indicated that they had never set an appointment to begin with. Of course, I was expected to sell them anyway.

6. The pitch is set up to be a "one call close", and seniors are pressured to "buy today" because the agent won't be able to return to their area for 4-6 months, which is a lie.

7. Although the products they sell are good products from reputable firms (as far as I was able to determine) their is no consideration given to the suitability of the product for the prospect. I was expected to sell them and cancell their current insurance even if it was as good as or better that what I had to offer.

8. As soon as I was "in the field", my requests for help or supplies were ignored. I couldn't get the home office to even return my calls or e-mails.

9. After I quit, even though they had paid me exactly $0, they went into my checking account without explanation or authorization , and stole $90 from me.

10. Overall, this was a costly mistake for me. In addition to the over $700 I paid for "training" and "supplies", I spent several hundred dollars in gas for my car, and, most importantly, wasted two months of my life when I could have been pursuing legitimate opportunities.

While SCH might be a good opportunity for some, BEWARE! It is NOT what they promise, and if you have either a conscience or ethics, I'd suggest you avoid it!

I was also with the firm back in 2004. Although your report is a little different it was essentially the same experience.

1. I didn't have to pay anything upfront. The documentation was provided to me although when I left it was expected that you mail everything back.

2. The licensing and fingerprinting was a standard cost and you can use it later if you continue to work in insurance. The web cam and microphone was not used in the old days. Training was by conference call for the most part. I think the web cam system would have been more effective though.

3. I received field training for a couple of days which was useful. It is important to feel comfortable going into a stranger's home and no amount of web based training will prepare you for that.

4. I'm not aware of about the Ranch but although Medicare is complicated to a degree just reading the standard guide that is handed out to seniors gives you a good amount of information to start with. It is important to know the differences between things like MediCal (or Medicaid), Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplements.

5. My biggest complaint and why I left after several weeks was the preset appointments. More than half of the appointments would be no shows or the senior would not see you. Part of this is because the appointments are aggressively set by their call center. In some cases the senior is not even sure why you are there and this is a gray area in terms of being in compliance with in at least CA. It was definitely a pain to be charged for an appointment that never occurred. Your costs could get very expensive over a month ($18 x 4 x 20=$1440) and you have little say in the quality control of the appointments.

6. The 4-6 month comment was a pure lie and somewhat like the use of twisting which is also frowned upon in CA. I'm surprised that one is still used.

7. The insurance products were good. I bet the people I signed up are still with the same carrier. This was when they used Mutual of Omaha. I later heard that they had to move to a different carrier. The non insurance products were not so hot and were very expensive since they were commission rich. Many of the non insurance items could be purchased just by shopping the web a bit.

8. I never had a problem with supplies and the frequent meeting during the week kept everyone is close contact. In fact it felt as if you were micromanaged at times even though you were not an employee.

9. After I quit I never received payment for the polices I wrote. I was told I had to wait until they earned out since I could not be advanced. Months later they did earn out and I was still not paid. After many emails I received an non detailed itemization that indicates that the cost of supplies (which I returned) canceled out the commission I earned. So I was ripped off by around $600 or so on top of the other out of pocket expenses. I always figured that this was a way of business for them since I've read many other similar reports.

10. Yes, it was a mistake for me as well but it was only for several weeks.
