My girlfriend/fiance and I were talking about starting a home based business and decided to go with smcorp. The initial membership fee was approx $400 paid out in 10 monthly payments. We were excited about receiving the start up kit which included 2 videos about the business (confusing at best to understand at first), along with a number to a business coach and one copy of each of the World of Products catalog, Bayberry catalog, and several brochures.

Also included was one order form with one envelope to mail in orders and a customer order book. The business coach was hard to get a hold of on the phone. Four days later we finally got him on the phone. He was helpful in telling us how the program worked (the basics on a few things). After that we were pretty much on our own. We made a few sales to a few people we knew at work and got excited, however when it came to selling to complete strangers, it became next to impossible to get their confidence in the product. Perhaps it was the World of Products catalog cover that scared them off. One lady we tried to sell to, practically told my girlfriend/fiance off for trying to sell her smc products.

Apparently she recognized the catalog and knew our merchandise source immediately. We went out and bought a computer thinking we could sell the products online on our own website.

Smc was advertising a full 3800+ product e-commerce website for $395. We even had a rep e-mail us and tell us this. When I called the smcorp 800# to ask about the website, I was told by two different people that the cheapest website they had was $2000 with no easy payment plan. We are currently having a friend build us a website at the cost of approx $500, however will only be able to have about 40-60 products on this site to start. It seems that smc has removed the website where you can easily download the world of products catalog and thus get the 3800+ items inexpensively.

I have not given up on smc yet, however feel that they do not do everything exactly right. I do like their product line and think it is fun if you can make a sell. I think for $400 you should get a full product e-commerce website with your own domain; especially after spending $400 on a membership. My girlfriend/fiance has almost flat given up on smc. If it does not sell on the internet I will too.

I believe SMC should offer a 90 day money back guarantee because 30 days is not enough time to establish whether or not you can effectively sell their product line.

SMC Not a Rip Off

AUTHOR: MJ - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, October 24, 2004

I have responded once before. I have been dealing with SMC since May 2004. I have said I have had issues, none different to other suppliers I use. I believe you have to work your business to reep profit. SMC is not responsible to make you a viable business owner. The SMC product is of quality. Their non-exclusive items are higher than you can get from other wholesalers so you should shop. I don't find their shipping costs higher than other suppliers, their time in delivery is questionable. If I have one complaint about SMC it is their hard and fast rule to return damaged items within 30 days. When you place a $2000 + order as I do, I can't get it all unpacked and examined within their time frame as I am a one man show. Also, once they send a return slip you only have 5 days to ship back. I am often out of town when their silps arrive so end up eating their damaged goods.

With this said I must add that this is the cost of being in business and you can write much of it off at the end of the year if you are doing your accounting correctly.

You have to remember that SMC is a supplier that offers more services than most. If you want to sit at home and wait for people to come to you that is your issue and has nothing to do with SMC. If you are willing to work 24/7 you will make it with or without SMC. I do $500 and some at a flea market two days on the weekend and sell the stuff all week in my shop. I also do mail order along with school & church fund raisers via the brochures, I don't charge shipping & discount 25-30% if I must & I still make money because I build a repeat customer base.

Stop complaining and get busy.

SMC:Selling Suggestions

AUTHOR: Char - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, October 24, 2004

I have been a Member of SMC for about a year.
My suggestion is if you have problems selling the product avoid buying a web page sence most sites sell the same items.Avoid selling at flea markets. Buy a kit I.E. Christmas or other items. Hold a yard or garage sale you will get better group of people who may not be as familuar with your products. Another thing buy brochures and place them on doors or cars in a parking lot it is free and legal to leave them, instead of spending money to mail them in bulk.
And above all: you must treat it like a job if you don't put your all into it you won't make money. This is your own home based business you don't work for SMC you work for yourself.

SMC MAKE MONEY

AUTHOR: Frank - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, October 24, 2004

I have been a member of smc for approx.3 years. It does work.I sell at fairs, festivals, flea markets, those of you who say its a ripoff, the fairy god mother is not going to deliver your money while you are sleeping, it takes work and money to make money.I currently have 2 sub-wholesalers who saved membership fees, and sell my products very well.

I am not saying smc is perfect as i have had problems with nasty representatives on the phone and un-helpful reps on the phone, but recently it has improved. The 2 sub wholesalers i sell to are the old fuller brush men and have approx 300 customers between them.I do very well at x-mas time and of course they do even better. You have to be careful what products you sell,as SMC has distributors all over the country.

My only complaint is they are flooding the market and making it more and more competitive, at fairs and festivals, as everyone seems to be selling their merchandise. As far as shipping i agree the rates are high however i went on ups ripoff web site and made as though i was returning a box with the weight given on it and it was the same as smc was charging so i believe the useless ups delivery service is the one to blame for that.

It is your own fault if it doesn't work...

AUTHOR: Shanna - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, October 23, 2004

First of All I would like to respond to all who complained about SMC... like stated before you get out of it what you put into it! SMC offers you MANY ways to sell there products, you choose. You don't have to go with any ONE way, my husband and I are going to place items on online auctions, going to weekend trade shows, and host a few at home partys and hand out catalogs. THEY offer to you ways to customise your catalogs, or you can just reface them. That isn't very hard... YOU do not work for SMC, they are your supplier. I don't understand why you all have a kink in your britches about it, because you didn't read and understand everything that was given to you!! I honestly haven't had any problems with SMC, and when I spoke to my coach for the first time, I didn't like her and told her that I wanted to speak to someone else or I was going to take my business elsewhere. IMEDIATLY, I was able to speek to a supervisor and voiced that I wan't happy. That I wanted someone else and I was PROMPTLY directed to someone else, who I am more able to conect with. IF YOU DON'T OPEN YOUR MOUTH TO THEM they can't help you... BUT if all you are going to do is COMPLAIN about your own neglagence, you are only ruining your own credability. THEY CAN'T HEAR YOU IF YOU DON'T OPEN YOUR MOUTH!!!

TERRY it is your own fault!!

Response To SMCebiz

AUTHOR: Char - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, October 07, 2004

I just wanted to say I'm sorry but you get what you ask for. On the contract and in the information kit it tells you that you CAN use SMC's designs on your Website or you can use the design on any of their Catalog for your own Catalogs but it states you CAN NOT use the name SMC in your business and you are not to tell anyone that you work for SMC because you don't, you work for yourself. You got sued because you broke your end of the contract.

I keep hearing that I didn't know this or they(SMC) didn't tell me that. I looked over everything in my handbooks and contract and everything is in "Black & White" it just takes a little effort to read through everything even the fine print. I have had no problem with them (SMC). My advice is read everything before signing don't get excited because you got your kit and right away you see the merchandise and can't wait to get started that you forget to read the paper work.

Remember this is your own business and you get out what you put into it if you break the law or you are too lazty to work then you deserve what you get NOTHING!!!!!

SMC is a rip-off

AUTHOR: Lori - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 06, 2004

I wanted to start an in home business and had read that SMC was not a rip-off so I decided to try it. It probably one of the biggest mistakes I ever made. I feel that by them saying you only have to pay $25.00 to get started is false advertising, I have already spent well over $100.00 in the past 3 weeks and I only have one order.

I agree that they should have a 90-day money back gaurantee because you can't do anything in 30 days and then your stuck paying the rest of the$400.00 membership. I know the coach I have is very hateful and I really don't like to deal with her, I'm getting over a major surgery and was informed that I had to go around the neighborhood and businesses to get orders, which is very hard when you can't walk. I wanted to start a home business so I could stay at home, isn't that the purpose of one?

Not a Ripoff

AUTHOR: Dennis - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, October 03, 2004

I have been a member since May of 2004. I will agree that SMCs shipping rates are high but you have to incorporate that into your total sales price. I have opened an ebay store and it was going well for a while but with the fees on ebay and shipping from smc and the total price of the product it is just too expensive for someone who does this full time like I do. I am going to stick it out though because I see my business picking up this holiday season. WHO NEEDS A WEBSITE. There are other avenues to make money with this.

SMC is not a rip ff

AUTHOR: MJ - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, September 28, 2004

I joined SMC in May 2004. I own a store and have a flea market space on a 12 month contract. I have experienced all sorts of issues with SMC, nothing different to issues I have with other suppliers I use.

I can tell you honestly, SMC is responsive, they do care about the issues you present to them and correct them often times at their cost if you are persistant and keep good records. SMC is a supplier, their job is not to make you successful. Success is our job you have to work your business 24/7. I sell their product at both my locations with success. Most of their products are of good quality. Yes, people know the SMC product so what! I sell 100's of other products that my customers know, when it is all said and done it is about price and your customer service that makes you thrive, it has nothing to do with our suppliers. Your success is about you.

I know nothing about the SMC websites as I have my own which I paid dearly for. It is a false statment that SMC does not make available all product photos to their members for download. They do, I do it all the time for promotional flyers or just so I can tag back stock with a picture so staff is not looking for inventory numbers.

Let me say this, I met my order quota and my membership fee was credited back immediately to my account.

If I have any issue with SMC it is their packing methods. They load their boxes with these pepples that fly everywhere and do nothing to protect the shipment. I have been fined by the owners of my building just for discaring this crap in their dumpsters. Shame on me as SMC gives you the opportunity at checkout to say how your order should be shipped. I could have said no stupid pepples, I didn't!

SMC is not a rip off, it is like any other company it requires you to be an alert business person. If you aren't you are the issue..not SMC.

SMC--Isn't all that bad!

AUTHOR: Carol - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 16, 2003

I have been involved with SMC for a year now, and I have learned that it is simply an opportunity and you get out of it what you put into it. There are many ways to make money with SMC products, auctions, flea markets, online sales. Whatever you choose you have to make an effort. Sure the start up is expensive, but then again so is starting any business. First five years are basically learning and tweaking years. Find your niche and stick to it.

As for the websites SMC sells, there is another website designer who specializes in SMC products, but who is NOT and I repeat NOT involved with SMC. They are not an affiliate or an off shoot of SMC. What they do is have ready to go websites that have all the SMC products already loaded and ready for orders. BUT it is up to YOU, the owner of the website to promote your own site. To learn more go to http://www.sellsmc.com and read the information. The sites run anywhere from about $400 for a basic already built site to about $1200 for a custom site.Your site will be registered in your name and you will be the owner.

This is NOT a rip off--but also remember that it is also not a get rich quick scheme. Investigate these people, call and talk directly to the owner of Sellsmc.com..One thing you have to look for with rip-offs is that there usually is no contact information, no email or phone number, and NO phyical address. NOT so with Sellsmc..or even SMC for that matter. Their contact information is clearly readily available.

failed to hear any good reasons why not to join them

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 05, 2003

I have just ordered my SMC kit and am awaiting its arrival now. I have read all your complaints about SMC, but have failed to hear any good reasons why not to join them. I think most of us understand what "opportunity" means, but some take that to mean some sort of promise or guarantee. Let me illustrate; You have the "opportunity" to get your drivers license at age 16, it doesn't mean you'll pass, but you're given the "opportunity". Maybe you or someone you know has tried to play guitar. You buy a descent guitar and amp and books and maybe even take lessons for a few months. How much money are you out all together? $400-$500 or even more? You are given the "opportunity" to learn to play, but that doesn't mean you'll be the next 'Chet Atkins'. Don't sue the guitar manufacturer or teacher or author of lesson books just because you got frustrated. I get a kick out of these handful of remarks I've read, trying to understand why people have taken the time to bash something that didn't work for them. SMC cannot print lies. They cannot print false claims of other successful SMC members. They can, however, say that your results will vary. And anyone who thinks that "opportunity" means guarantee or promise, needs their head examined. It takes work, persistence, drive, desire and effort to make ANY business work. Some of you are out $300 or $400 dollars....can you imagine all these small 'mom-n-pop' stores that Wal-Mart closed? They were out "tens of thousands" of dollars and you don't see them complaining like this. I have the "opportunity" to make some money with SMC. I'm sorry to those of you who didn't reach their 1 year goals in 3 months. I may not make a Million dollars, but, then again, I'm not going to try to. As long as I don't have to get up and work for someone else and make THEM rich while they make me poor with small wages....then I'm happy. Bottom line, SMC is simply giving you the "opportunity" to make things happen. No promises or guarantees, just the "opportunity". It doesn't always work, but life is like that...full of "opportunities". If the USA is called the "Land of Opportunity" and that meant guarantee or promise, we wouldn't have homeless people now would we.....

I have been with SMC for a year now and have no complaints. I work party plan and average $500 per party. That's not so bad. The out of stock items are an inconvenience, but even the major department store have out of stock items, and they don't offer to re-order when they become available. SMC lets you know the exact date each item will become available.

I don't use the website due to the high cost, but I don't need the website. Word of mouth advertising is the best, and so far it is working for me.

Thanks SMC for doing such a great job.

AUTHOR: Micah - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 31, 2002

I have used SMC myself off and one and have found very good results. Now as far as the web site I couldnt afford it, and the shipping was high for items under twentyfive dollars but I seemed to not have too much problems with it.

I set up a small table out on the street and I bought a small kit that was worth forty two dollars and made back that amount three times over. The only reason I didnt continue was we had to keep buying the catalogs, and we couldnt afford it at the time. I could have taken the money made and put it back in to do that.

So in all its not bad its what you put into it. Its all up to you!

Havn't had a problem with selling

AUTHOR: Steven - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 20, 2002

for 3 years I have been selling SMCorp products and have not had a problem selling.I started out traveling to different types of shows in my area and keeping other expenses to a mimnimum and in three years, my father in law (who got me started in SMC.) and I had built a business to the point of having our own store front now and this christmas season has been great. There were a few problems with the way that the company ran things at first. I had a problem with my monthly new arrivals letter not coming but now I just go to the web site. Its quicker. Then I was having a problem with all the "out of stock" items but when it was at its worst was when the dock workers were on strike, thats not SMC's fault and there was nothing that they could do.

I also dont not use them as my sole supplier, it gives variety to the variety that smc offers. I think about 60% of the people that start SMC are looking to make a fast buck and this is like anyother business, you have to put alot of time and money into it to get started. I know people who actually sell items for less than catalogue price to turn products faster. I wont do that because I feel I don't have to my items sell wothout having to cut prices. You just have to find what works best for you.

If you put only a little in thats all you get out where as if you put alot into it than you get alot back. Don't give up yet. find more avenues...there out there! Best wishes and Good Luck!

It is up to you

AUTHOR: Dave - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, December 15, 2002

I have been doing buiness with SMC for awhile now and would like to make the following observations.

1. Their Customer Service department has always answered any questions I have had in a satisfactory manner when contacted via telephone. Their customer service via email is lacking in promptness.

2. I too have lost sales to customers due to catalog recongnition. I have decided that instead of letting that get in my way, I will just make my own catalog.

3. SMC is a supplier, that is all they are. Any person that becomes a member does not work for them, they just buy their products from them. Your local grocery store does not work for a soft drink company just because they sell that brand of soft drink.

4. When you enter into any business, you are in control of it, not your suppliers. You decide how you are going to market the products and what you are going to charge for them. While I admit that the shipping and handling charges that SMC suggests are outrageous, I set my own charges.

5. It is very true that the fees SMC charges for the websites they offer are way out of line when compared to what is available that does not mean you have to use them to set up a website.

If you will use SMC strictly as a supplier and accept the fact that you are in business for yourself, work hard at it and be consistent, you will succeed.

Hello, I would like to reply about SMC Corp. I too have boughten the program in hopes of starting my own business. I have been with this program 1 year and have been getting very frustrated in the whole thing. 1st problem is that the shipping is to high for small products. I have had to eat many shipping costs for items under 25 dollers becauser I have had several complaints that they can get the product including shipping cheaper. Needlees to say that this has left me in the (-) as I will not rip off my costumers. I also do not agree with a charge of 2.50 dollers ( this is the charge SMC Corp charges for items under 25.00) because a costumer has purchased an item under 25.00.

I also checked into starting a web site through this co., But like my brother in law said," You can have a good web site built for alot less and be able to reach tech. support regarding you web site easier.

I do have to say that the products are fun to sell and yes costumers are saying that these products are SMC.

So When all is said and done, I hope SMC comes up with better advertising so that we who have boughten into this co. hoping to start our own business will have a better chance of our customers not reconizing where we are are getting our products from. Thank you for your time, Kim
