I was charged extremely a high bill. I was told that someone in the credit department authorized to increase our spending limit. Our spending limit was only $200.00 . Our plan was set up that if $200 was not paid then they would disconnect the cell phone service. We were never disconnected over some months. About a week age, we received a bill stating that we owe $600.00. I called up Sprint and they said that someone in the credit department increase our spending limit. Now I never authorized anyone to do that. Now they are saying that we owe $600.00. I find that very unfair and I feel very violated because this was done without my authorization and without my permission. Sprint never notified me. I want to know can this be done. Please notify me by email thank you.

#1 UPDATE Employee
CSR asks a few questions, and provides some insight on Sprint/nextel accounts with spending limits.

First off i'm a csr, the person who answers the phone when you call with a problem or a question.
I have a few questions first regarding the account issue presented here.
1. Is the 600.00 for one month or several months of service?
2. Did you add line(s) to the account at any time?
3. How long have you been a customer?
Now for a few facts about the Spending limit, Account Spending Limit, or ASL.
The spending limit is designed for people that are high credit risk, low FICO scores, to have the ability to have "normal" cellular service, and to keep from having massive bills every month.
This program requires a deposit, generally 50-250 dollars, and provides a spending limit of between 150(single line) up to several hundred dollars(single biggest one i've ever seen was 800.00 for one line).
If you hit this amount, with balance due and any pending charges(hasn't posted to a bill yet) you'll be hot lined, no outgoing calls. If its a multi line account then only the primary line is hotlined. If it goes around 15 dollars more then the entire account is suspended and you will be subject to a 25.00 reconnect fee.
For each line you add the spending limit goes up a multiple of the single line amount, that is if you asl is 150 then you add a line your asl will be 300. Add 2 lines and it will be 450. The suspension limit goes up as well.
The company can at any time and at their discretion, up your spending limit for being a good customer, or eliminate it all together, and no they don't have to notify you of it.
I've had several customers taken off the ASL program, and get a massive bill the next month because THEY can't control themselves in dowloads, text, overages, etc. Without the safety net of the asl, reminding them when they overdraft their account, the customer is their own worst enemy.
But if you are taken off the asl you can be put back on it if you request it. As far as lowering your asl back down, as long as the increase is not due to adding additional lines to the account you should be able to have that done too.
As to the 600.00 bill, I've seen one month bills this high, but usually on multi line accounts. If its a single line i find it harder to figure out, but I'd need more specifics to speak specifically to this issue.
Here is the method i use most often to describe the ASL
Think of a credit card.
When you hit your limit you can't use it any more.
when you go over you get an OCL(over credit limit) fee.(for asl its a reconnect fee)
you do have a balance due and an effective balance as well.
hope the correlation helps.
any other questions about this or any other sprint/nextel problems, just post on here and i'll get around to them, but please be very specific as to what charges you are referring to in a billing dispute issue, if i need more information i'll post the appropriate rebuttal to ask them.
