Just prior to returning my rental car, I Googled the closest gas station near the airport. I drove into the Sun Gas Station and prepared to fill up. As I was selecting the 87 grade fuel I was taken back by the price of gas being $5.299!!! I was shocked how high gas prices were in Orlando. But when I got home, I decided to search the web to see how much gas prices are in the Orlando area. On one web site that reports current gas prices of lowest to highest, I found a range of $3.33 to $3.69. There was one Mobil gas station for $4.29.
I noticed on this website that I am not the first to report this ripoff. I'm more amazed that they have gotten away with this for so long.

I understand I had a choice. I was in one of those situations where I needed gas before returning the car. And not knowing the area, I didn't know where the next closest gas station was.
Maybe I'm naive, but I always assumed that gas prices were roughly the same (+/- $0.20) where ever you go within a city.
I decided to report this because we as consumers are told to report gas price gouging. Maybe it is capitalism, which I stand behind btw, it's still gouging.
I know next time I'm in town I will not shop their convenience store or purchase gas there. And I will do all in my power, as my free right as a consumer, to warn everyone I know.

But shady.
Good call warning people about this practice. Next time get your gas somewhere that advertises their price and make sure it matches the pump. Or you can always buy a few gallons of water to top it off when you get close to the dropoff. Just leave the car running.

Hard to call it a ripoff.

This practice is pretty common in many major cities. Gas stations located closest to the rental car return will have absurdly high prices. The tipoff is that they do not advertise their prices on signs that you can see from the street. It's pretty simple to figure out why.
" As I was selecting the 87 grade fuel I was taken back by the price of gas being $5.299"
Since you noticed the fuel price before you filled up and still bought it, it's difficult to call it a ripoff. You certainly had the choice not to pay that price and go elsewhere. There's no law that says gas stations have to sell their product at the same price as their competitors. If they can stay in business charging a buck and a half more per gallon, there's obviously a market for their high priced gas. Here in America, the customers get to decide how much is too much. Since you knew the price and bought it anyway, you voted for the higher price with your wallet.

"I'm more amazed that they have gotten away with this for so long."
They are getting away with it because people choose to pay the price and because it's NOT a rip off.
For some reason many people think that something is a rip off just because it's expensive or above the market rate. Didn't you learn about American Free Enterprise in school??
Price control can lead to economic disaster. That's why The Continental Congress adopted an anti-price control resolution in 1778.
