This past spring I went to Cancun and was given a tour of The Royal Sunset. To make a long story short, I was pressured into purchasing a timeshare with a lot of verbal promises that were not incorporated into the written contract.

I was shown a property that I was promised WOULD be rented out at $1700 per week and it would be paying for itself within 5 years. The salesman said it was a "win win" , ''no lose investment'', etc. When I said it was out of the question, they showed me a property of lesser value with the same promises of rental income to offset the purchase price.

They kept persisting with their sales ploy, giving me free drinks and offering me better deals, in spite of the fact that I insisted that I was not interested or financially able to purchase a membership. They pressured me relentlessly assuring me that this was a profitable investment.

After being placed under duress, (6 hours and several alcohol filled drinks later) I finally agreed to sign a contract, however, they insisted that I must waive my right to rescind, which in of itself is illegal in any contract. None of the extra perks were delivered.(Free trips, weeks, etc.)

Upon returning home and doing internet research, I have found out that these timeshares are not able to be sold at any price nor rented- both of which were promised to me at the time of purchase. I quickly called to cancel my contract well within the 14 day grace period.

After the runaround of constant disconnections and being placed on hold, I personally spoke to Alberto Benray who said he would call me back, but never did. When I called back I was met with the same disconnections and and misunderstandings.

I finally spoke to someone named Alicia and was told that I couldn't cancel my contract for any reason. They promised me that they would make arrangments to downsize my timeshare or be flexible in order to accommodate my financial situation. They promised to send me additional information to review and they never sent it.

They are now threatening collections against me. I have gotten no where with them except threats and ignorant behaviour.


The original contract was only for $16,000, This company needs to be stopped in their tracks so that other people aren't scammed in the same manner out of money for which they work very hard. In the meantime, they have $6,000 of my money and I have absolutely NOTHING except headaches and threats. I am working to resolve this....get my contract cancelled and my deposit returned.
WATCH OUT FOR THIS COMPANY THEY ARE THEIVES!!!

Sunset Group did not receive any written communication requesting cancellation of this membership as stipulated in her contract. We tried contacting Jennifer by email after they joined and we did not receive any response. In July when the members were to make the downpayment, they were contacted by our legal department by phone and that is when we were made aware of their intention to cancel.

Since this took place more than 2 months after they joined, this was considered out of term of what is stated in the contract with them. Since the Sunset Group had no official written notification of request, further action can be taken on the part of Sunset Group since the member failed to comply with the terms of the membership.

To solve this matter immediately as I have now started the process of contacting all major media outlets. I'm sure with the Canadians having problems in Mexico lately that I will not have a problem getting the media's attention!!

Please vacationer's!! DO NOT ACCEPT ANY TOURS!! You will be force fed alcohol, you will be kept for hours listening to sales pitches until you feel there is no other way out but to sign!!

Sunset Group lawyers-Unmoving.

On April 19th I recieved yet another letter from a representive of The Sunset Group. Threatning to sue me if I did not remove all material posted in the negative about the group. They also informed me that the only contact was by mail. They did not provide me with a telephone number to contact them at.

I responded with a letter informing them that I was well within my rights to express my personal experience since it was not out of malice toward the company, only out of concern for myself and all others who may choose to get involved with this company.

This letter was one of a series of threatening and harrassing and liblous letters. In this particular letter they threatened to sue me, and in a former letter the representive Hector Tornell told me I needed to seek treatment for my alcohol issues. This forced me to include a definition of libel in my response to them. I provided a definition of "libel" and sited that Hector Tornell intentionally took steps to assasinate my character and that I had this in writing on their letterhead.

I made several calls while in Mexico to straighten out this mess. I signed the contract only because there were "guards" at the door and I felt very cornered into doing so. I felt in order to get out of there I must sign it. I was there HOURS!! I have friends willing to attest to the fact that I was gone the entire day and even they were getting concerned.

After I got home I cancelled my credit card so that they could not get anymore of the deposit or payments from me. This has so far, been they only thing I could have done.

So far, all I've recieved is threats against my credit rating. I've not recieved and inclination that the Sunset Group are willing to work this out. I will continue to keep all readers updated. I must do that in order to document what has happened and continues to happen to me, to protect others from it happening to them.

Hi Jennifer, Jenna,

I have been in the same boat and I cannot find any add'l info on how others have been able to get their money back from this elaborate con that Royal Sunset practices.

I have tried canceling but, like others, I was denied the right to because the illegal waiver that we were made to sign supposedly gave up our rights. We only purchased because of the "investment" value that was presented to us as well as more misled information. We had second thoughts and wanted to cancel while were still i Cancun but they would not let us cancel. And since we were not able to cancel they told us if we were to not continue to pay for the contract then they would keep our hefty deposit as well as send us to collections.

We were given an option to downgrade rather than pay under our original terms. We took it since it was less money to pay but it was still a high price from what I have found. We had no choice but to stick it out and pay off the downgraded contract because we thought we had no other choice but to do so or face collections or even spend more money with lawsuits.

I have been so upset over this whole ordeal and have felt helpless. But since I have found out that there are many others in our situation and have been able to take action against Royal Sunset, I want to be able to do so as well.

Please let me know what you have been able to find.

Go post about this at the other website too!! Don't forget to googel "mind the age gap" and it will be the first link that should come up. It won't be hard to find me since we have the same name.

I still haven't heard a word from them. I know we are not the only ones to complain. I also know alot of other people have challenged them and won, got there deposit back as well as out of their contracts.

We can too. Not to mention that if they are the ones unreasonable they will have to pay all attorney's fees ect...

I wanted to let you know I have an attorney in Mexico now handling this as well as Profeco and the Embassy. I have sent them all the correspondence or lack there of in regards to the sunset group and also have had a conference call with them and they informed me this is not the first complaint they have had with this company! I will go to the other website if you want and i can give you the attorney in Mexico's name and number. If we all go to him, he will know there is a problem and fight together!

I have not recieved even a quarter of what you have recieved. No such offer. Nothing. The Profeco has not responded to me either.

If you google "mind the age gap"(it will be the very first link listed) and look for the thread I started there, I found people with ideas and helpfulness. It is a different website I posted this problem in. They have also signed my guestbook drawing as much attention, as I can to The Sunset group.

I posted, telling them "I really need you guys" was the name of the thread. I signed my name at the bottom, so you will know who I am by looking. I use Jenna for short. 2 N's.

I have sent my letter off to Sunset attention to Hector Tornell and one of the ladies at "mind the age gap" helped me to write it, siting U.S laws since this is out of the U.S. She threatened to step up on my behalf and sue them for libel as the accused me (in writing) of abusing alcohol. Remember Hector Tornell has not laid eyes on me, let alone had a resonable conversation with me, so for him to write that in a letter, is LIBEL!!

I won't rest. They will not do this to me or anyone else I can show.

I hate other people are dealing with this company as well. Has Profeco responded to you? I sent my letter certified and also an attorney has been helping me. I only want to come to some understanding and that they should agree to refund my money at least part if not all! They even told us they would give us 10 corporate weeks free trying to resolve the problem that way. They told me I had until Monday to respond if we would accept that offer.

I contacted my attorney and I emailed back and declined the offer considering why would i want 10 free weeks with a company i no longer want to do dealings with. I declined the same day! They had already put a certificate in the mail for those weeks, like we agreed to it! I did not! I am mailing that back. I googled the response and found nothing... is there a secret to that?

I did get a letter from them telling me that they are suing me for Libel. They can go ahead and try it. They won't get anywhere. Since I didn't say anything slanderous or untrue. They did however tell me (in writing) that I needed to seek help for the alcohol problem they say I have. Which is of course not true. That was Hector Tornell's first mistake. That is grounds for me to sue for Libel.

I have gotten absolutely nowhere with them. When I call the call is "dropped" or no one seems to know where to direct my call.

When Hector Tornell calls me, he only screams in my ear and I don't understand what he is saying. So that is a waste of time.

I have had a letter drawn up by a third party. I will be sending it registered mail.

I didn't realize how much of a nightmare this was going to turn out to be. When I tried in Mexico to cancel they only put me off. Saying that I signed a waiver to waiver my right to cancel. This was illegal and when I ask for a copy of it, they say that they never asked me to sign such a thing. They did.

What I'd most like to do is get everyone with this issue, all on the same boat and sue together as a group. That would stop them. Unfortunetly, here you can't exchange personal info. I will try here to tell you to google,mind the age gap. There are people there with ideas.

What steps have you taken so far? Scam on Sunset Reorts

I have posted a response and I am to trying to get my money back from this group as well. We have contacted Profeco and also have an attorney here in the U.S. and now Mexico. What reasons are they telling you that they won't cancel? I have a post that i am going to upload to this site about Sunset Resort and how my situation is being handled or should i say NOT being handled properly! Did you get anywhere with Profeco? I can give you a Lawyer that is going to represent me in Mexico if you need that. We can start a website as well that links to their name to show the problems we are facing. I agree they need to be stopped!

After less than 24 hours of having my report up, Hector Tornell has called me a total of 5 times. Screaming at me that he will be suing me here in Canada for 100,000 per day. He didn't even give me a chance to ask how to solve this situation peaceably.

He has threatened to sue me for slander. This is not slander this is what is happening to me and my husband.

He has threatened to call me continuoulsy even after I tried to inform him that he is breaking Canadian harrassment laws. He just screamed above me.

I also received a phonecall from a Chantel requesting I call her to resloved this. Except she stated that she has sent me a second notice to pay. Which means she is also not willing to cancel the contract.

So, now I request of all the readers in this same situation to sign my questbook and start a chain to stop this non-sence as a group effort. This nonsence has to stop. They will go on taking advantage of vacationers as long as they are allowed.
