Today I got a call from Superior Asset Management stating that I owe 64.00 to T-Mobile from an account I closed out (and paid in full) in 2003.
I asked why I had not been contacted previous to this. They lied. I asked for information specific to my account. They could not provide it. I told them I wouldn't pay without a bill or sufficient evidence that I indeed owed this money. They threatened to call me every day and to make a record on my credit report if I didn't either produce an old bank statement (with my personal information, nice try scammers) or pay.
That's extortion!
I looked online and found countless other complaints concerning this exact scam. One even cited the EXACT amount I was told I owed. I called T-Mobile who, of course, could provide no additional information.
I'm taking tomorrow to figure out where to report these people. There are just SO MANY cases of fraud to wade through.

Kendy,
Don, by his own admission in another post, has been an "insider" for less than 2 weeks now in the collection business.
Most of his posts directly contradict the FDCPA.
I think the actual working knowledge of several years experience in this field would be preferential in getting real help to those who need it.

Kimberly,
T-Mobile is no longer involved here at all. [They] sold that account at least 2 years ago, and it may have been under Voicestream when actually sold. However, all of this is irrelevant, and your complaint is not against the phone company, it is against the collection agency.
Superior asset management MUST prove that you owe the debt. If they have no documentation, they have no case. Period. It is NOT your responsibility to prove that you do not owe something. The burden of proof is ALWAYS on the collector.
Go to FTC.gov and file complaints easily online for each violation of your rights they violated under the FDCPA which you can read and print out at that site too. Then go to budhibbs.com and read all about them and the collections industry in general.
Do not speak with any collector on the phone ever!
Do everything in writing and only by certified mail, return reciept requested.
Send a cease communication letter where you clearly dispute any part of the debt, and tell them that contacting you again will bring criminal harassment charges as well as a civil lawsuit for damages as spelled out in the FDCPA.
You will not hear from them again.

As a debt collector, I only get a file from the client. This file rarely has detailed information. IT has contact information and things like the balance, when an account was opened, the charge off date, and so on. With most clients, we have very little to work with.
As a former supervisor in customer care for T-Mobile, ask the agent to file a Outside Collection Agency (OCA form) form. T-Mobile has a department that deals with the collection agencies. They may take a few days to get back to you, but they will.
