My wife and I picked up a Hyunda Santa Fe in the garage area of Alamo. There were 3 standard SUV's available, one with a flat tire and the other had several areas of scratches and damage. We choice the least damaged Santa Fe, although we did notice a moderate scratch in the front bumper on the passenger side. This damage looked like it had been covered up with touch-up paint and there were no attendants in the garage area. We decided to take this vehicle. When we checked out their were 2-3 cars behind us and we decided Alamo was probably already aware of the scratch since there was an attempt to cover it and we didn't want to make everyone wait, so we just drove out and didn't mention the area to the attendant.
On returning the car the attendant said something to my wife on the other side of the car, and I heard her say that damage was there when we picked up the car. He didn't say anything to me other than to follow him. He took us to an office where he proceeded to fill out a damage report. I told him he didn't show me the damage only my wife, but that didn't phase him as it was a fairly long walk back to the vehicle. He said we should have mentioned the damage as nothing was in the computer showing damage. He also said the vehicle is inspected 3 times prior to going out and there was no mention of damage. He also mentioned he should collect our insurance deductible, but would let it go this time. I explained the touch-up paint and he said Alamo doesn't touch-up they paint the whole area. By this time, if we continued on this course of action we were going to miss our flight, so I told him I couldn't believe this was occuring and I would be contacting my insurance company. He said fine.
This incident occured on Feb. 12th 2016 a Friday, and I'm sure I will hear from them in a couple of weeks.
The following is info from the damage report:

You stated that you didn't want to point out the damage because there was 2 or 3 cars behind you while there was no attendant in the garage when you picked out the car with the least amount of damage. Well welcome to the world of car rental. Since you did not mention it to Alamo, and even stated that you assumed that they knew of the damage because of the touch up paint is your mistake. Apparently, Alamo did not know about the damage and now you are responsible. Two weeks ago, I rented a car from a different car company.
Unfortunately, I did not notice the same damage as you witnessed on your rental. But thankfully, the CLERK THAT WALKED THE CAR WITH ME DID NOTICE IT AND MADE A NOTATION OF IT AND THE CAR RENTAL PAPERWORK. Please note what I just typed in capital letters. It was aware of before I left the lot. When I returned the car, a different person signed me back in and tried to get me for the damage. Thankfully, I had my original paperwork with me and told showed it to him. He wasn't happy not charging me for it but to bad. Maybe next time you will show prior damage to the attendant so you won't have to pay. Consider this a lesson learned.
