Progressive said my 2000 ford escort was totaled because the damage was greater than 70% the value of the vehicle $36000.00. within 2days they had the car towed away. I financed $10,000.00 for this car 2yrs ago and still had $5200.00 to pay on it.
Progressive paid $3500.00 to ford credit to pay off the car that leaves me a $1700 bill and no car for all my full coverage ins payments and 2yrs of car payments. I have pictures of this car and you can see this car is not totaled, I drove it home from the site of the accident about 12 miles without any light or gages indicating a problem. then I inspected the engine. Then I took it to a bodyshop. Yes the damage was $3800.00 but after you subtract my deductable (1,000.00) they only pay $2800.00.
So why did I lose out on all that money? Because progressive say it was totaled at 3800.00 damage but they wouldn't have to pay that after my deductable. Progressive took another fine car away from a hard working honest american. Hope they feel good. They seem to be part of the desease.

First of all, sorry for your loss. Accidents are terrible and should not happen but reality is they do every single day.
I'm not stating you were underpaid or overpaid for your vehicle. From my experience with these issues often times people pay more for their vehicle than what it is worth. If your involved in a accident and your vehicle is a total loss you are paid the fair market value for it.
If you had purchased GAP insurance on your policy you may be paid what you owe and not what the car is actually worth.
Think of it like this no matter how silly it may sound.... If you buy a broom for $30 and I borrow it and break it and tell you I will replace it for what it's worth. I go out and find the exact same broom for $15, why should I pay you the full $30? Is it my fault I found a better deal on it? If you were charged too much by the retailer for your purchase why am I the bad guy? Now we can get even more complicated. Lets say the broom you borrow me is damaged. Why should I pay you the full amount of a perfect broom with no damage. Is a damaged product worth the same as one with no damage? No. If you are buying a car on a dealers lot and their are two exact cars with the same mileage, etc. Would you expect to pay less for one that has hail damage or excessive door dings. Probably.
I can tell you I paid $10,000 for my car and now it is totaled. Average retail for this same car may be $5,000. Did I overpay for my car? Seems so. Blame the insurance company? If it makes you feel better about your choice to overpay. Perhaps you should be upset with the dealership that overcharged you.
