We received a flyer in the mail from The Zoo about a new gym opening in our city. The flyer clearly stated that it was a 24 hour gym and memberships were only $10/month. Although we are very happy at our current gym, we decided to go check it out at their presale.
When we got there, it quickly became apparent that the ad was intentionally misleading. It is either 24 hour access (for like $40/month) or $10/month (for limited time access).
The whole time we were there, we felt like the guy doing the sales was playing a shell game and beating around the bush. We could never get a direct answer to any single question.
Even when we asked about the corporate/franchise history, the answers were very vague. Apparenetly, of all the locations that they say that they have across the United States, most of them have never been opened. They are "coming soon".
After that, we came home and did some research on the internet to find that other people have had the same complaint at other Zoo locations.
We are not typically the type people to write complaints like this. We only decided to do so after something that happened a week after we visited the yet to be opened gym.
A former employee of our current gym who is working at The Zoo called us (and a friend of ours in our current gym) and said that our gym was going to be closing so he urged us to come join the new gym.
We went and talked to the people at our gym and they said that they were not closing and went on to say that their former employee was actually fired from their facility based on complaints from some women in the gym that had been complaining about his inappropriate actions as well as other ethical issues.
Who do we trust? Our current gym. They have been there for years and have always been super nice. The Zoo and it's people seem to be very shady. They are just like the classic sales people that were in the fitness industry years ago. I thought we had gotten past all that.

Anytime Fitness Makes False and Bogus Claims: Worried About New Competition Coming to Town
AUTHOR: Chris - (United States of America)
SUBMITTED: Wednesday, September 21, 2011
We have reason to believe that this report was filed libelously by a competing Anytime Fitness located nearby the facility mentioned in the above report. The Anytime gym has sent in employees/anonymous shoppers to our facility, and, under the guise of inquiring about potential memberships, they have slandered our good name and our employees in front of our clients.
In their statement, Anytime Fitness said our flyer was a 24 hour gym for $40/month, even though in the flyer, it clearly shows $10 per month with a one-time start up fee of $39. Also, on the flyer, it shows we are open from 4 am until midnight 7 days/week. Nowhere, as Anytime indicated, do we claim to be open 24 hours or have $40/month memberships. We also clearly disclose on the flyer that some additional costs may apply next to the 4 am to midnight, 7 days/week. Our highest priced membership is only $19/mo, which includes a long list of incredible benefits.
Anytime Fitness also makes more false claims in their statement above regarding "coming soon" on our gym locations. ALL locations are indeed open and thriving. If they would bother to get their facts straight before making bogus claims, and do their research, they would find this to be true. Again, not sure why they are posting false information about our gym..other than the very obvious.
They claim shady behavior, yet the only "shady" thing going on is Anytime Fitness' false statements. Naturally, they are worried that a brand new facility with new state-of-the-art equipment is getting ready to open near them. It would appear that this Anytime Fitness has come down with a rather serious case of sour grapes regarding the introduction of a competing heath club in the Winter Springs market.
We are pleased by the reception of our new club to the area and we have been visited by many former and current members of Anytime, who consistently complain about the state of disrepair of Anytime. These members are excited to join a new, clean, and exceptional facility and have brought along and referred friends and family members to visit our pre-enrollment center.
My wife and I are so excited to be opening this new gym and welcome the chance to meet anyone thinking of joining us. We also look forward to joining the Winter Springs community. We have nothing but great intentions to make this a wonderful, fun, family oriented gym for our local community. We have already met so many great people in the community and new members, and look forward to seeing everyone in our great new health club! Please feel free to visit and meet us and our friendly staff. We will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
Counsel for our company has asked the Anytime Fitness owners to cease and desist from these actions under threat of a lawsuit. Please take the comments in this report for what they are: baseless claims from a disgruntled competitor.
