I purchased a GPS from TOMTOM which was priced at $49.95. After noticing the maps were not correct I connected my device to the computer and downloaded there software. They are asking for $69.95 to update the GPS. I specifically bought a TOMTOM brand GPS, because they are known for having free map updates. They are being deceptive and sold me a device that does not function correctly unless I purchase the update the costs more then the device.

DID??

Did TomTom contact you? I certainly hope youre not refering to me. I dont work for a SEO or TomTom. Im just a consumer that attempts to answer questions. Im imparting to you the KNOWLEDGE I have picked up in shopping for GPS for MY family. I find it quite disturbing that you would think that anyone posting is a TomTom employee, or that they would care one way or the other about YOUR situation. As I pointed out, you went with the cheaper version that DID NOT have the LM which means you have to pay for any updates. Which means THEY would have no reason to rebut your post. THEY dont have to CARE!!!!
Upon re-reading both your original post AND your rebuttal I noticed that your words kinda betray you. "They are known for free updates". In the past 10 years I have NEVER recieved a "FREE" update on ANY of the GPS I have. Ive had TomTom, garmin, etrex. So I ask you, where is it that you are getting THIS information from? Did you have a freind that had a TomTom? Did you read an article? Or is this more of the American Consumer BS?
I really hate to burst your bubble, but Im being nice today. Anyone who spends ANY time on this site knows that I call stupid when its reported. I also call out those people who are just posting here to cause drama, and I also defend the average employee when a customer thinks that they can abuse them because the employee works where they are shopping. You are exhibiting the signals of someone just b******* to b****.
TomTom had ZERO control over which device YOU purchased. Had you done the research as I did, then you would have made your purchase and would have been happy. The cost of YOUR device is no way is factored into the cost of the update. TomTom charges the SAME price for EVERY device that requires an update that isnt covered automatically.
As I said before, if you can return the GPS do so and purchase one that has LIFETIME MAPS. YOU made an assumption that ALL TomTom updates are free. Theres nothing wrong with that except its an unrealistic view. And in the future DO SOME RESEARCH!!! You could have saved yourself the time and aggrivation in dealing with this had you done so. Also, I would say try and contact TomToms customer support. Maybe if you explain the situation to them that you just purchased this GPS and its outdated, they MAY be able to offer you a free update. But you wont know until you try.

" I specifically bought a TOMTOM brand GPS, because they are known for having free map updates."
"They pay someone for "reputation management" because they know how many people are pissed off about being lied to!"
YOU posted both of the above. Who lied o you to get you to buy he TOMTOM? OR...were you just guessing the map updates were free?
I think you're changing your story to bolster your report here. Where's the Ripoff?..other than you "a*suming" something?

The fact that it took a TOMTOM employee less then an hour to respond to my ripoffreport complaint just shows how misleading of a company TOMTOM really is. They pay someone for "reputation management" because they know how many people are pissed off about being lied to!

No your problem is that you purchaseed the wrong one. When dealing with GPS systems you need to understand the shorthand they use. Bare with me and I will explain. On most of your GPS units that offer special features there are ALWAYS a few capital letters after the model number.
LM = Lifetime Maps
T = Traffic updates.
If the model that YOU purchased doesnt offer LM then you will have to purchase the updates. I suspect that you went with the $50 due to its price. But the more expensive ones are the ones with the ADDED feratures. If you can take it back to where you purchased it from then do so and then TALK with a sales person and TELL THEM what you need. You probably made the simple assumption that ALL TomTom devices offered FREE MAPS. That is not and has not been the case in quite a few years.
Push comes to shove, the MAJOR street information wont change. Highways, freeways, toll roads, ect. You could always just go back to a PAPER map. Its cheaper. And then just use that GPS as a "backup" map.
