For Halloween 2013, myself and a friend decided to go as characters from the movie "They Live".  A small mask / horror company by the name of Trick Or Treat Studios was selling officially liscened masks from the movie.  We jumped on the oppertunity to purchase two of them, separate orders.  I purchased mine directly from the company, and my friend purchased from eBay.

Trick or Treat studios charges for 2 day shipping.  They created a shipping label on Oct 20th, but did not ship the item out until Oct 22nd.  I sent an email to Lupe, their sales manager asking if the item was shipping out on the 20th or if a label was created, to which I did not receive a reply.

Upon receiving the mask on Oct 23rd, I was excited, and put the mask on.  Prior to ordering, I was aware that the mask would have very small eye slits to see.  The website had it's own blog that stated they keep the eye slits small so you can make them to fit your field of view.

After a few long tortuous hours of slowly cutting tiny pieces of latex out of the eyes to make it fit correctly, it was impossible to still see, and if I continued any further, it would render the mask useless, since the eyes are a major part of the masks design to begin with.

I contacted Chris, the owner of the company, who again referred me to their websites blog.  I responded that although I followed the blog, it would not work in my favor, and if there was some way we could come to an agreement.  His response was "well, I don't know what to tell you"

Based on the fact the website sells masks and has a blog on their website stating to cut and modify the eye slits for a better fit, a response from the owner telling me "I don't know what to tell you", upsets me as a consumer.

I opened up a paypal dispute, requesting something be done with me having to spend $74 on something that will now sit on display, to which the owner responded to the dispute stating they have a no return policy if the mask is worn or altered.  As of today October 26th 2013, the website www.trickortreatstudios.com does not have any return policy listed on their site.

Chris also stated that the mask is made to the "industry standard" of 24.5 inches, based on the average human head circumference.  He also stated to paypal that due to health and safety reasons there are no returns. He did however, tell me via email if I did not cut the mask he would have offered a refund.  As of today October 26th 2013, the website www.trickortreatstudios.com does not have the industry standard head size or the health and safety standards listed.

My friend, who ordered the same mask from a different retailer via eBay, did have mask issues regarding fit size and viewing issues was offered a refund for the item.  He was also only charged $54 for the same item, where in my case I decided to purchase the mask from the source who produced them, figuring I would be loyal to their company.

This is not a bash towards Trick Or Treat Studios.  They do in fact design fantastic masks with excellent details.  I am not a mask collector, and was only purchasing one to wear a few times as a halloween costume. There is no personal vendetta or targeting going on here.  As a small business owner, I always want my customers to be happy, and if there is an issue that is beyond my control, I try to rectify the situation to the best of my ability.  The owner could have either offered an exchange for a different item, a coupon for a future purchase or even put disclaimers on the website.  I just feel I was ripped off for $74.

Please check their facebook account.  I am not the only one who has ran into this issue with the mask being too large or having sight issues.

I think it's important to point out that Anthony did not contact me until after he had already modified the mask, i.e. cut the eyes, making the mask unsellable to a new customer.  If he had contacted me before cutting the eyes and telling me it didn't fit, I would have given him an exchange or refund no problem.

I responded to Anthony three times with suggestions on how to make the mask fit better, after the third email, I told him I was out of suggestions and didn't know what to tell him, his response "was to enjoy my $70."  Than he went and filed a Pay Pal Dispute for item not as described and posted he slander on Ripoff Report.

Again, all he had to do was contact me before cutting the mask, so that I could have had an opportunity to exchange the mask or refund.  He says he is a small business owner, well I ask you this Anthony, would your company return something after you modified it to the point that it couldn't be resold to another customer?  That is like buying paints from Macy's, having them hemmed and than taking them back trying to get a refund because the Taylor made them too short.

Again, be a man and take some responsibility here Anthony.  You caused the problem, not me.  Next time contact the company before you modify something so that it can’t be exchanged!

The Whole Truth

It is really unfortunate when customers only provide part of the story.

All are masks are designed to fit the average human head size, 24 1/2", which is the industry standard and is used by every costume company on earth.  We do not guarantee fit as there is always going to be customers with larger and smaller heads than the average.   We clearly stated on our Facebook site that the eye cuts on the They Live mask were cut small to preserve the integrity of the screen used mask from the movie They Live, which was used to produce this mask.

Anthony contacted me and told me that he couldn't see out of the mask, so I referred him to our Blog which has step by step instructions to make your mask fit and adjust eye cuts.  He than wrote me again and told me he was still having issues seeing out of the mask, so I suggested that he can make the mask fit better by applying foam or pieces of sponge to the inside of the mask on the side and crown of the head.  He than wrote me a third time telling me he could not see and I recommended cutting the star in the eyes out.  Again, he contacted me telling him he could not see, at which point I told Anthony "I don't no what else to you," which was the truth as I had suggested everything that I could recommend.

Than Anthony wrote me again, this time demanding a refund, which was the first time he suggested a refund as each email prior was a suggestion to make the mask fit. I told him that I could not give him a refund for three reasons.  First, as clearly states on our website that we only do refunds for defects, and fit is not a defect.  Second, the mask was worn and according to California Health and Safety Laws we cannot return a mask once worn.  And third, the eyes were cuts, hence the mask is not in original condition and is not sellable.

Since Anthony did not like that response, he filed a Pay Pal dispute against us and wrote this review.

I have all of the emails that were exchanged between us and I am happy to provide them to anyone that wants to check them out so that they can see the whole truth in this exchange.

Sometimes you get customers that are never happy, Anthony is one of them.
