In September, my wife and I went to refinance our house and pulled our credit bureaus to check for errors. We found a total of 6 small hospital/doctor bills which were not paid by the insurance company and we were never informed by the creditors . I called up the creditors or the collection companies and paid off the bills and when we went to refinance our credit was clear. I then subscribed to Truecredit.com to check our credit every month to insure that this did not happen again. October and November's credit reports showed that the bills were paid off and we felt better. I then pulled a credit bureau thru TrueCredit.com and found 2 new bills on the bureau which "magically appeared ", with no notification, (True Credit is supposed to notify you of ANY changes, which they didn't) that they said dated back to 11/2006. When I called the Debt collection company they said that they have been on there since 11/2006 , I went off.. I explained that I monitor both bureaus at a cost of 29.90 per month for my wife and I and they were NOT on there in September. They said thats what their records show and to call the credit bureau. I then called Transunion and was connected to a person whom I could not understand and sounded like he was talking out of Nigeria. This person said that the information was correct and it was on my credit bureau since the date the collection company said. I asked him to look back at my credit bureau from September and to verify that the bills were not there. He said that he could not because the reports were thru TrueCredit and I should contact the reports (Truecredit) company. I then asked to speak to a supervisor and he said but he had to verify my address first. I gave him my address 4 times and finally he said, "there is no such address in your town",(who lives here, him or I ?) and that I should request the address change in writing. I then said let me speak with a supervisor and he said hold on and cut me off.
Feeling totally frustrated, I contacted TrueCredit by phone and got what sounded like a west Indian woman, whom I could barely understand, and tried to explain to her what the problem was after arguing with her because it was my wifes credit bureau which had the entries on it and she had to talk to my wife first to get permission to talk to me. Finally I explained the problem to her and she tells me that the information is fed to the credit bureau and they cannot verify if the debt collector information is correct and that I should contact the credit bureau. Another run around.
It appears that Transunion is the Garbage collector of the credit bureaus and takes any information, right or wrong and uses it to slam your credit and their scores are always at least 100 points lower but that the banks use them so you're screwed. I have now gone back to the original creditors to ask them for copies of the bills to see if the insurance companies have paid them already so I guess I'll have to hassle with the collectors if I pay the bills direct to the creditors but I will not pay the debt collectors as you cannot get the money back from them if you double pay them. An investigation should be launched into why the 3 credit bureaus differ so widely or why we even need 3 different credit bureaus.
