A couple of weeks ago, I attended one of these UCC Total Home/Direct Buy Presenations. After sitting through the infomerical-like presenation, it was quite convincing but what ultimately was the deal-breaker was their high pressure sales tactics. When I asked if I could leave and do a little research, they claim that they couldn't do that because they wanted to "protect the relationships they have with their vendors".
What a load of crap. The only thing any of the sales reps want, is for you to sign up, and then get you out the door. This particular location was asking for close to $4000 in membership fees. I wasn't about to plunk down that kind of money without being able to do some research on the company.
Later when I came home, I found this website and read the negative reports. They have similar complaints (poor customer service, no guarantees of best price (which some retail stores will do), and no way of getting out of your contract, etc.)
Eventually, I'm sure this company will show up on a news magazine show like Dateline, 48 Hours, 20/20 that uncovers all of the unethical practices they employ.
To the people who have experienced success with this company, God bless you, but I didn't get a good feeling of the personnel at this particular location.

My wife saw the infomercial, and a salesman just called about 45 minutes ago to set up an appointment at the Greenville, S.C., store about 45 minutes from our house. I thought it rather odd that I needed an appointment to "go to the store," so like you, Joe, I began scoping out the place. The stories between this and another site are so similar among complainants that there appears to be a definite, systemic problem with all of DirectBuy. Thanks to you and others and to Ripoff Report, we WON'T be honoring our appointment. And I dare them to try to put pressure on US!

Warning! Directbuy is a scam that use to go by the name UCC Totalhome. Before that they were known as United Consumers Club. They are trying to get consumers to buy a non-refundable, non-cancellable "membership" contract costing $3000 or more, payable in advance. You are led into this trap by thinking that by paying $3000 (or more) membership fee (in advance) that you will get better prices - that you will be able to buy at "cost." But there are no guarantees.
The National Post news article got it right when they reported:
"Another fine print stipulation stated: "No oral promises or statements not contained in this agreement shall bind or obligate the club."
News Net 5's expose on what was then UCC Totalhome (now DirectBuy) found out:
"But UCC's contract states: "No oral promises or statements not contained in this membership agreement are binding."
There are no guarantees that you will be buying at "cost" and there are no guarantees of savings whatsoever. Since the "membership" fee is non-refundable and non-cancellable, should you not realize any savings, oh well, too bad - no refunds!
Buyer beware this scam!
