We were stopping at our house to drop some things off before heading back out again when a young man between our house and our neighbors engaged us in conversation, very self depraciating, and funny, and full of charisma.  He told us his sob story of being 1 of 17 kids, having an 11-year-old of his own, and a brother that was killed at 17 - he even showed us pictures of the boys.  Not to mention, he was a 6-time convicted felon.  After quite some time, he finally got to the point - selling overpriced magazine subscriptions.  We felt generous, so we purchased 1 subscription, to be donated to whoever could use it.  We wrote him a check, and he was on his way.  Once inside, my curiosity got me, and I had to research UDMG - it was then that I saw the Ripoff Report information and got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.  After discussing it, my wife and I put a stop-payment on the check, hoping to quickly get it back, as the account# & routing # on the checks are not very secure.  She texted him (luckily it was his legit cell#) and told him that we were concerned that it would bounce on him, so we'd give him cash instead.  He quickly responded, thanking us, and he'd be back in our area on Monday.  Monday came and went - nothing.  She contacted him on Tuesday, only to hear that "he quit his job on Tuesday, and we could cancel the order & stop payment on the check (little did he know that we'd already done so), but...  he was stranded near Richmond - could we wire him the money that we were going to spend on the magazine?" - even busted, he still couldn't stop trying to scam us out of money.  We're out a stop-payment fee and next-day postage to send the cancellation, but nothing more - not to say that I'm still checking our bank account every day, ready to report anything suspicious to my bank's fraud department.  Beware these folks!! I wish we would've just kept driving on by!!

He could have been telling the truth about being stranded!  If you research these traveling magazine sales crews, you will read some horror stories, including being stranded.  That said, the story he told you about his family was no doubt false. They do lie to gain trust and sympathy. But if you really think about it, anyone who undertakes this sort of job is pretty desperate and sad to begin with. So, why lie?

Lesson learned: unless it's the neighbor's daughter selling girl scout cookies, don't buy from strangers at your door.
