United Circulation Old lady duped into writing large check for magazines that should go to military. Durham, North Carolina

When my doorbell rang, there were 2 clean-cut nice looking gentlemen.  As the one smiled and seemed so congenial, I opened the door (which I never do!)  He stated that they are college students, and are trying to get enough points for a trip to London.  He mentioned that his grandmother lives on one of the side roads off my road, and she always said to find out if the person is a Christian.  I told him I am, and he said he was.

He said some of the magazines are for the Military and some are for children.  I chose the Readers Digest to be sent to a Military person.  I wrote him a check, gave him a sticker with my name and address on it in order for the Military person to send a "thank you".  He said to make the check out to United Circulation, which I did.

After they left, saying they are going to call on one of my neighbors, whose name he called.  I realized that I had no receipt...NOTHING!  They were already out of sight, and that's when I looked online for United Circulation, and saw the many fradulent complaints.  I called a neighbor on the road which he said his grandmother lived, and of course, she was not there.  Therefore, I immediately called the bank and stopped payment on the check.  This, of course, costs me; however, not as much as the check!  My question is, "Who gets the money when these checks are made out?"

We need to be careful these days.....I hope I have learned my lesson!!
