I contacted United Military Travel on 9/6/2014 because they advertise on their website, "We can offer Military Discounted Airfare Tickets, Military Discounted Hotel Reservations, and Military Discounted Car Rentals". My family (3 adults, 1 child) are taking a vacation in Jan. 2015 from Oahu to The Big Island of HI. I asked for 2 quotes- one with hotel stay in the Volcanic National Park and the other staying in a cottage (2 bedrooms & 1 bathroom) right outside the park, including 4 plane tickets & an SUV car rental for 5 days, 4 nights. United Travel quoted me $6,796.00 for the whole trip (staying in the park) & $5,592.00 (staying outside the park in a cottage 20 mi away). Outrageous !!! I asked the travel agent how much United Travel was charging us for just the plane tickets- $318 per ticket. I had previously looked into how much the plane tickets would cost (Honolulu to Hilo roundtrip) thru Expedia.com before calling. Expedia's price for the same airline & flight's, $200 per person & that's with taxes. After hearing $318 per plane ticket, I didn't proceed & kindly told the travel agent I could book the trip myself for MUCH CHEAPER. He said they did have to charge booking fees & fees for financing the trip-costs included in the quotes I received (even though we were going to do '90 days same as cash'). Plane ticket's thru United travel would have cost, $318 x 4 passengers= $1,272.00. With the 1st quote (staying in the park), total for trip $6,796-$1,272 plane tickets=$5,524 for lodging & car rental...to stay in the only hotel in the Volcanic Nat. Park for our requested dates is $315 per night, so United Travel's upcharge is huge! I’m not sure what “discounts” their referring to. I booked the trip myself (going thru Expedia for some reservations). I did change our plans a little, but kept the same dates. For 4 plane tickets (departing Honolulu to Hilo, returning Kona to Honolulu, $800), 2 bedroom & 2 bath cottage 4 miles outside the National Park ($624.35), Jeep Wrangler car rental ($376.55) & one night stay @ The Courtyard by Marriott in Kailua-Kona ($223.43) for a total cost of $2,024.33. United Military Travel wanted to charge us MORE THAN DOUBLE for our trip. They are NOT in the business of helping the military, just trying to rip them off !!! If I had booked the trip solely thru Expedia.com it would have even been cheaper!
