I was lead to believe that I would have marketable skills when I finished your course.  I started in medical transcription and transferred to legal after a couple of months.  I spent 2 yrs. finishing these courses and was excited about my future.  I could finally make money from home.

Little did I know that my skills were obsolete before I even started.  Had I thought the process through, I would've realized this myself, but I trusted your company, your research, and your sales people, to tell me the truth.  Big mistake!!!!!  Stenographers and scopers are all but extinct due to digital and video recordings now.

I've left several messages at transcription offices where secretaries are excited about having me "on their team", but never receive a call back.  I went on-line to National Association of Court Reporters, where their blogs between stenographers complain they have little work due to digital and video and have lost a lot of work, especially in transcribing.  Attorneys would rather spend $1 on a disc rather than much more for a written transcript.

How stupid of me to have believed in you "Institute."  $2500 expensive lesson.  You also said your institute was accredited, however it is not per the tax code.

A copy of this will also go to the BBB.

Response from USCI

AUTHOR: Leslie - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, July 09, 2012

Thank you for taking the time to write. USCI always appreciates the opportunity to assist our students and graduates.

I understand your concern about available jobs. The school relies heavily on information from the government and graduates in establishing occupational demand. The U.S. Department of Labors Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) evaluates and forecasts demand for certain careers. For Legal Transcription, it is best to look at what is forecast for both paralegals and legal secretaries. According to the BLS, Employment of court reporters is expected to grow by 14 percent from 2010 to 2020, as fast as the average for all occupations. Those with experience and training in techniques for helping deaf and hard-of-hearing people, such as real-time captioning and Communication Access Real-Time Translation (CART), will have the best job prospects. (http://www.bls.gov/ooh/legal/court-reporters.htm). For legal secretaries, the BLS states, Overall employment of secretaries and administrative assistants is expected to grow 12 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (http://www.bls.gov/ooh/Office-and-Administrative-Support/Secretaries-and-administrative-assistants.htm)

The school takes student and graduate support very seriously. We would like to assist you in your efforts to market your new skill, but without speaking to you in person, it is difficult to ascertain what is going on in your job search. I strongly encourage you to contact the school at 800-347-7899, ext 6334 so you can speak with a graduate counselor.

You indicate some concern about accreditation and government education (Title IV) money. USCI is fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training  Council (DETC). The Accrediting Commission of the DETC is listed by the U.S.  Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency.  Accredited schools do not automatically participate in accepting Title IV education tax dollars. While it is true that only accredited schools can receive Title IV funds, the reverse is not true. A school can be recognized by an accrediting body listed with the U.S. Department of Education and not accept Title IV funds. Accreditation is the indicator of quality, not whether a school accepts Title IV government money for tuition. USCI provides a quality education at an affordable tuition and offers a low, interest-free tuition payment plan to its students. Ultimately, students will pay less to USCI by not using Title IV loans with interest.
