I had heard USAA had a very good interest rate on their Savings account. So on Feb 12, 2018 i decided to open a Checking and Savings account with USAA Federal Savings Bank. I deposited $100 in my checking and $1000 in Savings. A couple days later i was reviewing my account online at USAA and discovered someone had taken $610 from my Savings account. Immediately i contacted USAA to report it and discovered, no one could tell me what had happend to my money but they would research and investigate. I called everyday til one USAA rep finally informed that it was an offset but she did not know what. All she could confirm money was withdrawn from my Savings account.
Later in the week, an email arrived to my USAA account informing me that i had a previous account with USAA in 2009 and the money taken from my Savings account was an "uncharacterized offset". My account was closed favorably with USAA in 2009 and i was never contacted by phone, letter or email that i owed money to USAA. What bothers me is that is my hard working money i earned through my civilian job cause not eligible for my retirement benefits til 2022. USAA did not bother to communicate with me to inform me before they withdrew the money. Gave me no explanation or the opportunity to work out some arrangement to pay back the $610, no terms whatsoever.
That's when i called USAA to inform i would be closing both checking and savings account this past weekend due to this incident. USAA cannot be trusted with your money i thought to myself. They claim to support the military, retiree and veterans and their families but they are a "bunch of ripoffs". They took my money without an apology, explanation, nothing. There name is mud in my book and i will not hesitate to report it to the BBB. Am willing to share my story with the media, lawyers and any of my military friends of this down right, mishandling by this bank of this hardworking veteran and military retiree.
