Have been trying to cancel my membership since Thanksgiving.  They always say they will cancel it, there is a form I have to fill out, aren't I happy with my Gym? Etc.  I'm six hundred miles from there, with little access to the outside world.  I do regularly check my bank account, and there they are again! It's like the used car dealer that sells a new car to the same old guy once a week (this really happened). 

You have to be an expert on their terms to get away from them.  I will have to move banks I guess, then the pricks will hound me through my credit report, I DID SOMETHING WRONG???. Don't ever sign up for any memberships. Take the money and equip your basement for your needs.  At least your own equipment will stay out of your account if you can't use it for any reason.
