Waffle House has a procedure for filling orders that customers need to know about.

It is called "marking" plates. Let's say you order hash browns. The waitress will call out "mark one hash browns". The cook will then take a plate off the shelf and place a small amount of RAW hash browns in the plate.

That's "marking"

When the order is cooked, the cook will then put the cooked hash browns in the plate WITHOUT REMOVING THE RAW ONES!

I complained, only to be told by the district manager that "this is how it is done and WE WILL NOT CHANGE!"

Sheesh

I've worked for Waffle House for 5 years off and on and have a TON of experience. NOONE since I've been with the company, has ever gotten sick from this!!
It's a raw POTATO. That's a VEGETABLE. Vegetables are eaten RAW OR COOOKED. And the cook only marks the plate with 1 little piece of the hashbrown to show that it gets them. The only reason people want the things cooked anyway are for the different flavor they are given by the oil and grill.......or maybe they have a texture thing...
Anyone who knows anything about Waffle House knows that the company has been around since the 60's and they have an old-fashioned way of doing most things.

I have been all over the world literally working for Cummins and have personally ate at some good Waffle Houses and a few bad ones but thats like any other place. But when I was doing a job here man I meet a hot looking waitress at this one and when she got off her shift that Saturday we tore up the town and had wild sex all night back at the Motel man that waitress could ride like a cowgirl should. She could also suck the chrome off my bumper if you know what I mean yea boy that was a good time in that town I wonder if she still works there at that Waffle House she might walk a little funny thoe because I jack hammered that for at least 3 hours before switching it up.

seems quite petty.

First of all, I have worked for the company for many years. Also, I have eaten there since long before that. Potato's were eaten raw for hundred of years if not centurys. Cooked food is a commodity now days. My second point is that the 2 shreds of potato are on the plate. The cooked hashbrowns coming off a 475 degree grill are put directly on top of those 2 shreds of potato. Any rational minded adult would know that simply would kill any sort of germ or bacteria. I don't know the details but what it sounds like to me is that you had not such a nice day and you needed something or someone to blame. Those woman work there tails off. The last thing they need or deserve is petty behavior from an adult.

I don't want to see what you're doing to my food.

Sure, you might consider it nasty. Hashbrowns sitting in a bin all day could cause problems. Not as bad as beef/fish or poultry sitting out all day and their inherit risks, but they might get a bit, tacky. (I come from a strong Ukrainian background and learned all about potatoes)

I've worked for and/or known people that worked for many restaurants acorss the country. Places like Waffle House, (and other restaurants that cook out in the open sight of customers, aren't the ones you have to watch out for.

So basically, what you're saying is: I don't want to see what you're doing to my food.

The deer-in-the-headlights look is not uncommon in restaurants. Last winter my girlfriend and i were dining at a four-star and part of the appetizer was this orange stuff. We asked the waiter what it was and he gave that look. Granted, he came back in about fifteen minues with an answer, but he still had the look.

Hey, you can call me a loser if you want, but I won't cry over raw potatoes.

So they should be honest about it

To those of you who are defending this practice by Waffle House....

Why doesn't the server inform the customer when they place their order of the practice?

When customers do see it happening and object, the employees get a deer-in-the-headlights look, hoping no one else heard.

I don't care if eating raw potatoes is "ok", it is a nasty practice for Waffle House to do this. I suppose that bin of raw hash browns stays bacteria free all day huh?

Puh-leeze! How about people who DON'T slave away for Awful House weigh in on this instead of you losers?

No worries!

AUTHOR: Linda - (U.S.A.)

There really isnt anything to worry about! The hash browns are rehydrated potatoes! They come in a large box shaped like a milk carton and filled with water until they "puff" up again, and then drained. Potatoes are veggies so it is ok to eat them raw, such as carrots. Now if you see them putting raw meat such as chicken on the plate, then there would be a problem!

Hope this helps!

How is this a rip-off? Did you get sick?
If you were talking meat, I'd be concerned.
