On February 23rd at 8:30 am noticed an endcap featuring "artisan rolls" for just under $5.00 for a container - a clear plastic dome that cakes are usually sold in. Unfortunately, the sell-by date was for the 24th - the next day.
I did not buy, but continued shopping. Upon check-out I noticed an employee removing the rolls from the shelf, as they were not selling.
I returned that same evening to find the display full of "Fresh " rolls with a sell-by date of March 3rd...a full week. I happily bought the "new" rolls thinking that They were just baked, and would be great with that nights dinner. WRONG! Every single roll was rock-hard stale. Not fit to feed to the birds.
It dawned on me that the guy took the containers in the back and changed the sell-by stickers on the soon -to-be stale rolls. To check I tried peeling off the sticker - it comes right off.
I've been in retail over 25 years and one thing that I know is that labels are not removeable unless by design.
One thing that I've learned is not to buy rolls in hard plastic containers that don't allow for a little freshness squeeze.
It's not the five bucks, it's the lack of honesty that I resent.

No...You put them out of buisness.

People like you, who want to buy "dognuts" really, really cheap, put those little stores out of business. Walmart could open a store on every corner, but if you don't shop there, they will go out of business.

What Happed?

Remember all the home made dognut bussiness around the town in the past?
WalMart put them out of job.

#2 Consumer Suggestion
You can't confirm that.

It could've just been a bad batch; not necessarily someone changing the dates. The Wal-mart bakery isn't exactly five-star quality to begin with.

Yeah, he probably just changed the dates. We slap on a fancy name, like 'artisan rolls' and when you think they might be stale, we just rely upon you to think you're too much of a goober to know what an 'artisan roll' is, and just think it's supposed to be like that. Yep, just take 'em back. But make sure you find a store manager and tell him what was going on, they just love it when someone catches them. It'll all be worth it to watch him lie his way out of it!
