West Coast Metal Buildings Inc. does not stand behind their product. They built 5 carports for us 1 year ago and after the first snow, one of them came crashing down on top of the 2 trucks that were parked underneath Causing damage to both trucks as well as complete destruction of the carport that cost $3200.
My son had been under the carport just minutes earlier and could have been crushed to death had he not returned to the house to get something. The carport obviously was constructed poorly or it would not have collasped. The few braces that it did have were ripped apart.
We contacted West Coast Metal Buildings Inc. customer service immediately and were told their structures are not warranted for collasping...only that they warrant the metal will not rust for 20 years. If we had wanted it warranted, we would have had to pay for an engineers stamp. What a bunch of hogwash.
They should not be allowed to sell carports that will not stand up to the elements. In order to keep the price "cheap" they don't put the number of braces on them to keep it safe. In fact, they had to install extra bracing in order to construct the carport and when it was finished they removed the braces that supported it.(They couldn't stand on top of the carport to put the metal roof on without the extra bracing.)

Excellent Product!

We have a large carport erected by West Coast Metal Buildings, Inc. in September of 2011. It is a certified building, and has withstood snow and high winds with no problem at all (we live in the high desert). It is sturdy and well built, and we have been very satisfied with it. If you try to go too cheap you will suffer the consequences...you get what you pay for. We ordered an upgraded certified building and still feel the price was very reasonable.

Consumer Got What They Paid For

After review of the complaint and looking and the manufacturer's website, I am convinced the consumer received exactly what they ordered - a light gauge steel frame building, which is not designed as a permanent structure.
All too often, consumers close their eyes to the obvious and then get all upset when their being penny wise and pound foolish implodes upon them.
The building manufacturer clearly offers on their website the ability to purchase engineer certified buildings, however buildings which are designed by an engineer, are only good up to the load capacities designed for. For buildings of this type (Category I occupancy - where it is unlikely anyone will be injured in the event of a failure), the probability of the design loads being exceeded are once in every 25 years.
To paraphrase the consumer in the complaint - the consumer should have had the foresight to not purchase a building without clearly making certain what they purchased, would meet with their expectations.

One of Five?

One of the 5 buildings fell? One would ask if this one building was placed next to another buildings that slid its snow off onto it or if it was under big tress that could have done the same. Some condition would have to affect this one and not the others.
WCMB does sell Certified Buildings to meet the local wind and snow requirements for all of Oregon, Washington, and Northern California. Had this building been ordered as a certified model this would not of happened. Food for thought why did only one collapse? Had this been a Certified Model it would have been guaranteed to withstand the Local wind/snow conditions.
We sell carports for any number of purposes. Everything from Propane Pump covers to Goat Sheds to Warehouses. Some require engineering, some do not. Therefore we offer both Engineered Buildings and Non-Engineered Buildings.
All of our buildings are built to be able to get on top. They are built this way so that the installers are able to attach the Sheet Metal Roofing and so that a roof may be cleaned as needed.
