I switched to z-tel to get away from two seperate bills. I had problems switching because SWB put a block on my phone. I think the concept of ztel was a good one. Trouble is they have POOR service and You are just a number and knowone cares.
It is like they act like AT&T. Like they are the only game in town. I had Ztel for three months. I signed up under my son. He was to get $20 for doing this. He never saw a dime. I have another son who as a joke (to get even with me for a personal matter) called ztek from another town and told them he was me. He said I was moving from kansas to olkahoma and needed the phone to be turned off. It took ztel about 4 hour to turn the phone off.
I called the next day to see what happened. That is when I found out about me moving! They said it would be 72 hours to turn it back on. I explained to them that my wife was handicapped and She shouldn't be without a phone. They said they would hurry. It took two weeks to get it back on. Then they messed up and transposed my phone number so it was the wrong number. It took another week to get that streightened out. After all was back as it should be I switched phone services.
To this day(6 mo. later) they are still trying to charge me for when my service was off and say they are going to turn my service off. I had a z tell calling card stolen(the one I said I didn't want they sent it anyway) because it was my son who took it they call it familuar crime and I am stuck with all the calls. He than gave the card to someone else and I am stuck with there calls too. It is kinda funny I guess. I got crank phone calls from my son who was upset with me for finding out he took the calling card. Now I have to pay for the calls because they were on the calling card comming to my home.
Anyway I would stay away from ztell until they get there act together on customer service.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds
It's really not a rip off

Z-tel is really not responsible for it taking so long on getting the phone services switched, disconnected, turned on etc... They lease their lines from the phone company in that particular city, state, area, etc...(ex. SWB, BellSouth,etc..) Z-tel only puts in the request for services to be done. The only people allowed to disconnect, repair etc is that phone company they are leasing their lines from.
In my opinion, if the company they are leasing their lines from is taking so long to do these services it could be because they have so many of their customers to work with or it could be they are doing this intentionally because you are switching your services over to Z-tel. You have to work there in order to understand how everything works. If they could have their own lines run than they can faulted for the lack of service or whatever the problem may be.
About the phone card situation. It would be just like any other company. It would look strange if the card is stolen and you are receiving most of those calls to your home number. It's really a judgement call on their part. I haven't worked there in 3 years now and I am not sure of what rules they have now about a situation like yours.
Also, if a person is handicap, terminally ill, etc... with a doctor's note the phone services are suppose to be expedited and turned on immediately. So, Z-tel contacts the phone company from whom they lease their lines from and submits the request. The phone company just does not honor it in a timely manner like it suppose to be done.
It's really not Z-tels fault for alot of these problems.
From what I remember this was the way is was going at this time but I could be mistakened and again things could have changed dramatically from that time.
