Amigo Energy no Amigo of Mine Astronomical Rates and No Final Bill Houston Texas

I know there are now several complaints about Amigo Energy now on the Ripoff Report. I, like many other users, had month-to-month rates of around 11 cents per kilowatt-hour. In one month, however, my rates jumped to almost 20 cents a kilowatt-hour. That is a substantial increase by any measure... Unfortunately, the way laws are written in the state of Texas these electric companies can charge you just about anything they want based on the plan you have, so according to the Texas Utility Commission, there is no big deal with a company raising your rates 100 or 200 percent in just one month.

After my rates went to about 20 cents per kilowatt-hour I received a lot of spam from Amigo Energy asking that I sign-up for these long-term and "locked-in" contracts with the company. Instead, the day I received the bill with rates that were almost double the prior months rate, I switched to the local electric cooperative in my area.

Now then, I usually receive my bills from Amigo Energy around the 25th of each month. Since I dropped them about a month ago, NO FINAL BILL. I called up customer service this morning at about two minutes after they opened and it still took about 20 minutes to get through and I was told the following:

My bill was "generated on June 22nd" and that I had until August 7th to pay my bill. They gave me the amount over the phone and told me that they would e-mail me a duplicate bill. Still no e-mail with the duplicate bill, so I have NO IDEA how much I would be paying for per kilowatt hour in my last month with this company. From some of the other complaints it sounds like around 26 cents a kilowatt-hour... But I was lucky. As soon as those rates went up I switched companies so now I've had a different company since the middle of the month. Some of the others who've complained will be stuck with another month of Amigo Energy at God only knows what rates per kilowatt hours.

I will file a complaint with the State of Texas Utility Commission to get a final bill out of this company. This problem, along with the others who have posted similar complaints, are the reason we need to have Texas repeal the deregulation of electric power in our state. Texas went from one of the cheapest per kilowatt-hour in the United States to one of the most expensive. Rather than calling it "freedom to choose" it should have been called "freedom to choose your robber."
