Through every step of the process to becoming a "district sales associate" I spoke with and confirmed maximum distance to "pre-set appointments". This process went through 4 different people and their levels of personell management including the trainer and the team coordinator. I specifically asked each of these 4 employees what the maximum distance from my city, a major city in California, could be.
I was told 30 miles on 4 seperate confirmations of my pertinent question. I went on to each process with each person ( confirming the same max distance criteria ) completing the sales training program and issued a presentation kit.
I called after completion the following morning to get my 1st set appointment which was 50 miles away. Apparently all 4 personell I dealt with have absolutely no regard for the truth and are trained to overcome objections without any integrity or regard for any situation other than the company's myopic view of their customer's stupidity and their workforce's desperation. Furthermore, I have never read such a completely one-sided "independent contractor's agreement" stipulating how they have no ethics regarding a salesperson's interests including complete non-payment should a salesman leave the company for any reason whatsoever.
I cannot go past the 1st appointment after their 1st blatant and flagrant lie. You have got to know when to fold 'em or "cut and run" and minimize exposure to an obviously toxic environment founded on deceit. Now, I believe most of the rhetoric surrounding this company's business practices and how the brothers of the owner ( probably still very "connected" ) were fined $ 24 million dollars by the FTC. The coordinator said they have "combined" experience of 50 years, although the company is just 2 years old ( since the Federal Trade Commission's imposed fine).

You are right, 30 miles from your zip code - not your home, which in my case, was therefore approx 47 miles, not the 30 max - and a difference of over 50% than promised . .... I stopped ALL correspondence right then & there, choosing not to spend any of MY resources (time, gas, energy, etc.) and , in fact, never went to the 1st call, as well. As far as their FTC problems are concerned, those are very real problems especially when you consider people like Madoff operated for several years before he "turned himself in" because, otherwise, he would have been killed immediately by a not so "legal" loser w/ "connections". The slap on the wrist for questionable derivative trading, sub-prime mortgage fraud, etc . ... also indicates how bad these APEX badboys were & are. And then there's the S & P . . ....
An independent contractor in sales these days needs to ask a lot of pertinent questions, not too many where they won't give you a job, but enough to realize a company's integrity especially w/respect to payroll, charge backs, and timelines.
I have another constant business aand therefore can invest some amount of my resources towards a "legitimate" sales job. I will not stand for BS like thse guys perpetrate for even 1 day. They are a waste of all your time, gas, energy, but especially, dignity.

Just out of sheer curiosity, I called this company about becoming a rep. I asked several times about the promise of appointments within 30 miles of my home . It was clarified thrice that appointments were set within 30 miles of my zip code. So, I had them send me an email offer and it states clearly, pre-set appointments with 30 miles of zipcode.
I'd like to know the details of the FTC sanction. That's a huge sanction! FTC doesn't levy that kind of fine without something being terribly wrong.
The practice of non-payment of commission if a rep. leaves the company is pretty standard stuff and usually all residuals are also forfeited as well. If a stock option is included, that's usually purchased at set intervals and any purchases prior to the termination date are secure. (In general)
I think a part of the problem is sometimes that an unemployed person is, indeed, desperate and driving 50 miles is a problem. But, how would this same person drive to work for two or three weeks until the first check comes in if in such serious financial condition, unless he/she was just lucky enough to get a job right around the corner. Even bus fare for 2 or 3 weeks would be more than gasoline for 20 additional miles. This economy sucks, no doubt!
