In August of 2018 I purchased a rented textbook from Chegg.com.  The book arrived and because the account is one that is only used for textbooks for college, I never looked at it until it was time to return the books in December.  At that time I noticed that Chegg had signed me up for a program called Chegg Study that I never signed up for and was billing me $15.94 monthly for it!  I called them as soon as I saw the charges and asked what that was all about.  They explained what the program was and said, "If you didn't sign up for it I will remove the last 3 months of charges, but I cannot remove the 4th one." I asked why not since I had never once attempted to even use it.  They said they couldn't refund me for more than 3 months ago.  I had a hinky feeling about them at that point, but decided it could have been an honest mistake and I would let it slide.

Come January I am enrolled in my next term of classes and that's when I found Chegg had the book I needed for the cheapest rental price again.  I clearly saw the place to sign up for Chegg Study this time and did NOT mark I wanted that.  So I placed my order and had them charge my card.  The book arrives and classes start and on the first day the teacher informs us the wrong textbook edition was posted and we actually needed another book.  So I contacted Chegg and it was still within my time to return it for a full refund.  They told me to go into my account and print out a return label to send it back.  I mailed it back and they decided to charge me for the shipping even though they never once mentioned I'd be charged for the shipping as I would have done it more cheaply myself.

Then at the end of January I noticed a charge in my account.  It's that same $15.94 and I knew right away what they had done.  Once again, they charged me for the Chegg Study that I never once have signed up for, but they add it on to my orders anyway!  I go online to chat them up and tell them I want a refund.  The idiot I am talking to tells me their systems are down and they cannot verify the incorrect charge but they will likely be back up in an hour.  I said, "Ok and?"  They didn't say, "Chat us back up then.  Or call us then."  Or anything of the sort.  When I finally said, "What are YOU going to do about fraudulently charging my card?"  I was told they would look into it in an hour and then email me with the information.  I told them, "You will issue me a full refund and send me an email saying you've done so, and you will never charge my card again, or I will be contacting the authorities as this is fraud and you've pulled this same stunt on me twice now!"  At this point the person I was talking to disconnected the chat.

I then got on the phone and called my bank to report the charge.  I will also be contacting the BBB and the Attorney General in the state of California where they are located.  It is illegal to charge someone's card for a service they never requested, but to continue to do so monthly and then refuse to give them a full refund when they inform you of it, is fraud.

If you have been charged for a service you never signed up for from Chegg I highly suggest you do the same steps I have done.  That they are taking advantage of college students is disgusting!
