John Moore's technician came out to fix my A/C and arrived at 10:15 am on 05/23/2011, because the temperature was 80 degrees.  He charged $718.00 for 2 capacitor that he said that would fix the  problem.  He left at 12:29 pm and the unit was running but not blowing any cold air through the ducts.  He never checked the freon or the unit for any other problems.  The technical said it would take 4 hours to cool down.  It never did, and 4 hours later the temperature was 81 degrees.

I called John Moore to come back, I was told the tech would be here between noon-5:00 pm on 05/23/2011.  He did not arrive on time, and 3 phone calls later to John Moore, he finally got here at 10:30 pm after he had finished all his service calls.  Instead of them sending someone else out, we had to wait until the tech finished all his service calls.  He walks in with the A/C gauges around his neck to finally test the unit.  The tech decided that the freon was low, so he added 10 pounds to the unit.  This amount is shown on the invoice.  The unit did cool down, but when the outside temp got in the 90's, the outside unit shut down.  The tech said unit was leaking freon at the evaporator and this was why it was shutting down.  But he did not check the evaporator for leaks and said the evaporator needed to be replaced.

I called another company and they came out, and fixed the unit.  They checked the freon pressures and they determined there was to much freon in the unit, and checked the evaporator and it was not leaking.  The unit has been working fine since the 2nd company came out.

John Moore said the freon was low.  If it was low, then where was the freon leaking.  John Moore added 10 pounds (so they say), if it leaking, then why didn't this added 10 pounds leak out.

I called John Moore numerous times regarding the overcharge and the fact that they did not fix the problem.  I talked to Donna Blair and she was suppose to get back with me.  Then on June 6, at 4:51 pm, I got a call from the technician's supervisor.  I explained I had talked to another company regarding John Moore's charges.  The other company said they charge $385.00 for the same repair.  His answer was they charge this price because they offer 24 hour/7 day service.  My service call was for Monday morning - it was not an after hour service call.  I also told him the technician did not fix the a/c problem.  He again said that the evaporator needed to be replaced before the unit would work properly.

The 2 capacitors can be purchased at any a/c supply store for $59.00.  This is the same brand and same size that John Moore put in.  So, when they charged $718.00, and still did not fix the problem, that is and excessive charge.

Thank you.

08/05/2011, John Moore promises to look into my complaint, but I call & Tom Cartledge will not call me back

AUTHOR: Howard - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, August 05, 2011

After I contacted the Better Business Bureau of Bryan/College Station, TX, I received a call on 07/19/11 from Tom Cartledge. He asked that I fax him a copy of the invoice from the 2nd company that fixed my a/c.  Their invoice shows that they had to drain freon out of the unit because John Moore had overfiled the unit. The 2nd company said that they charge $385.00 for 2 capacitors. John Moore's shows that they added 10 lbs to my a/c unit.  The 2nd company said that they charge $385.00, John Moore charged $718.00.  I faxed Tom the invoice and have waited for him to call me back.  I have called his office several times, left my name and number.  It is 08/05/2011 and he has not returned my call.  He did admit that there was a problem from their end and he would get back to me.  Well he has not

If paid with CC charge it back

AUTHOR: voiceofreason - (United States of America)

If paid with a credit card, charge it back, based on what the 2nd company said and did. Insist to your card issuer you were defrauded. And, for whatever it may be worth, complain to the BBB, and any industry groups the 1st company claims to belong to.

Ten Pounds of freon??

AUTHOR: Ken - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, July 03, 2011

How big is this air conditioner to take 10 additional pounds of freon?

I was not aware that most home sized A/C's used this amount.

It may be noted on the outside unit nameplate.

Good luck with your latest repair...we've been extremely lucky with our 35+ year old GE 2 ton heavy duty unit....it's still out there keeping the house at 76 when it's almost 100 outside.

It's been serviced/checked once in that 35 years, and they added a minimal amount of freon.

I keep the coil clean and the blowers lubed and have been rewarded with trouble free service.
