Don't go to Valvoline Instant Oil Change on Erie Boulevard, Syracuse NY! What type of business persuades a 20 year old college student with a 2011 Buick Lucerne into spending $100 for a synthetic oil change. My daughter went to Valvoline Instant Oil Change on Erie Boulevard. This business talked a college student, who knows nothing about cars into getting a synthetic oil change for a 12 year old vehicle. This is highway robbery. When I called, the service lady on the phone was rude. Don't go to Valvoline Instant Oil change on Erie Boulevard in Syracuse NY

First, many people use synthetic oil in their cars. I put synthetic oil in my 20-year-old Toyota. That's a great way to make sure the engine lasts a long time and doesn't develop sludge issues, especially when modern cars only call for an oil change every 10-15k and cars routinely last 20 years and a quarter-million miles (not that you are likely to experience that with a GM product). And synthetic oil costs what, maybe $5 more than the cheapest grades of regular oil? It's very cheap insurance, and I don't think it's unreasonable for a shop to recommend synthetic oil, or even use it exclusively.
And yes, $100 for an oil change is high, but the onus is on your daughter to shop around, compare prices, and do her research. A 20 year old is an adult, and learning about car care does not require using your male organs, so put your sexist stereotypes where they belong. If your daughter doesn't care about cars, that's her choice. You can either help her learn, or accept that she will occasionally end up overpaying or paying for unnecessary work.
