Moving from Midland Tx to San Antonio Tx I put in a request on the internet for a mover. This guy Nick called me and was really nice he sent me a quote of what it was going to cost me to move. I accepted his bid at 2400.00 total to move he asked me how many rooms and how many boxes. I told him I had a four bedroom house and some patio furniture. He went on to tell me that at 119. per hour and two men would be sufficient plus of course the 13 hours of travel and the cost for fuel at 545.00.
There would also be a 250.00 per diem for food and lodging. I agreed, the day before the move he e-mailed me and told me that it was going to require 3 men to do the move so that was going to cost me 139.00 instead of 119.00. I agreed since it was to late to find someone else to move me I had to close on my house and was given 3 days to move. I also gave him 500.00 down payment. At the end of the move he said I owed him an additional 500.00. I ended paying this liar more than 3000.00.
I tried to reason with him and he insisted that i had told him that I had 10 pieces of furniture and some boxes, I told him why would I need a mover for 10 pieces of furniture? I want to let people know to read the comments of anything they are going to do before they hire anyone. DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE THE MAN IS A LIAR. DIDN'T EVEN TAKE IT INTO CONSIDERATION THAT I HAD JUST LOST MY HUSBAND AND WAS MOVING CLOSE TO MY CHILDREN.

You Got A Bargain

I accepted his bid at 2400.00 total to move he asked me how many rooms and how many boxes. I told him I had a four bedroom house and some patio furniture. He went on to tell me that at 119. per hour and two men would be sufficient plus of course the 13 hours of travel and the cost for fuel at 545.00...the day before the move he e-mailed me and told me that it was going to require 3 men to do the move so that was going to cost me 139.00 instead of 119.00. Local moves are billed hourly and whether it's $119 per hour for 2 men or $139 for 3 - both are more than reasonable rates for the move. Unless you get some lazy movers, however many hours they work....is how much you're going to be billed. You were not going to find anyone who would do it for cheaper than that that would also be legit.
At the end of the move he said I owed him an additional 500.00. I ended paying this liar more than 3000.00. So let's see, the per diem and the fuel, that's $745.00 total, right? 13 hours drive time at $139 per hour (yes you have to pay them for travel time as well) is $1,807 for a total of $2,552.00. Now you didn't indicate how much time they spent on the job, but if they worked 2 hours at origin and 2 hours at destination at $139 hour hour, then I calculate the move to come to $3,108. Maybe they worked less, but there is often a 4 hour minimum. Even if it were 2 guys, the move would still cost you about $2,800. I'm guessing at the end of the day, you probably didn't tip these gentlemen either? They are the lowest paid people in the moving industry, and the hardest working.
DIDN'T EVEN TAKE IT INTO CONSIDERATION THAT I HAD JUST LOST MY HUSBAND AND WAS MOVING CLOSE TO MY CHILDREN. Not even close to being relevant to anything you just discussed or your situation. The only consideration at this point is:
- Did the mover charge you an unreasonable rate to perform the move? The answer is NO.
- Did the mover slack off and take too much time to perform the move? You were certainly charged more for windshield time than you were for the actual move itself. The question is whether 13 hours was too much. The answer is NO - the distance one-way from Midland to San Antonio with a fuel stop is about 6.50 hours (343 miles), so 13 hours is correct. With a 4 hour minimum...what you paid is correct.
People move for all sorts of reasons and legitimate movers step in and perform a professional job in often trying circumstances. You think they took advantage of you because of your husband's passing? Well, consider this: Most movers charge windshield time at 2X the normal hourly rate because driving back after the move without a load costs a mover a great deal of money. Had they done that, the cost of your move would be closer to $5,000. By not charging you 2X and only charging you the regular hourly rate, you got a REAL bargain, and in the middle of a mover's busy season.
Based on your own narrative, they did a professional job.
