The American Express gift card that I purchased for $100 has been declined by numerous merchants who accept American Express (despite my efforts to verify the available balance). This is a rip off. AmEx basically gets to keep my money and prevent me from redeeming the card's value. Don't buy these cards, they will cheat you. This product is not regulated like a normal credit card or bank account.

Peter,

just curious, but, was the card run through as a credit card? because if it was not, then the register will decline it (like if it was run through as a gift card/misc). Those type of cards, AMEX, VISA, etc HAVE to be run through as a credit card otherwise it will not work, even if say you run through as a gift card/misc the first time & it declines it & then you try to re-run it as a credit card, it will still decline it. I work for a retailer who sells these types of cards & I'd say about half the people I come across who use these cards aren't aware of that.

Kris
