I received a letter over the weekend from ARA stating that I owed $694.54 to a creditor named Radio Shack Citi Financial, (a company I have not done buisness with). On Monday morning, I called ARA to inquire about this supposed collection I owed them. The letter was from a Mark Farmer, and I spoke with the "floor manager" Mr. Hall at extention 3062. I was informed that they could not give me any information except to say that payments had been made on the account at one time. Other than that he said that he didn't have any other information he could give me. After offering to settle with me for a lower amount, he threatened to turn it over to the lawyer in 30 minutes if I did not return the call and pay them. After much research and many phone calls to Radio Shack, Citi Financial, and Capitol One, I found that this debt does NOT belong to me....of course I knew that in the beginning.
Threatening and scare tactics do not bother me but are absolutely uncalled for. I am sure they get many people to pay this way. Don't be fooled, do your research.

A very similar thing happened to me. The creepy guy I talked to on the phone was quite obviously "phishing" to trick me into giving him more information, and fortunately I didn't fall for it. He was very, very threatening.
This stuff is way against the law, as far as I can tell from reading the laws myself. You may want to look for a fair debt collection practices (FDCPA) attorney in your state or in a state near yours. Some of them are willing to take cases without charging you a retainer, because if you win the case, part of the law says that the defendant pays the plaintiff's attorney fees. There are lawyers who make quite a tidy living by defending people from debt collectors who break the law.
