I wish I would have reported these theives along time ago. About two years ago I purchased a car from them for about 2,900 dollars. I needed a car and only had a little bit of money and no credit, so I didn't want to try for a loan anywhere. They took advantage of the fact that I was a woman and I had cash to pay for it and drive it off the lot.

I drove the car for about 1 month and 1 week before the brakes started making a horrible screeching sound. Very upset about this my husband took it in and said that this wasn't acceptible because they had claimed an inspection warranty. They claimed that you could not drive a car off their lot unless it was inspectable, which they claimed it was. So when they took it in to check they brakes they called later that afternoon and said it was good and they had replaced the brakes and we shouldn't have any more problems with the brakes. About another month and a half later I had the car at my father's house in a town three hours away from where I lived. I had drove my two babies about 356 miles thinking I was in a safe car. While there my dad suggested we have them looked at because he was hearing a sound that didn't sound good. We took the car to VIP and they did a free inspection. After taking the wheels off it was obvious that the brakes had NEVER been replaced and they the routers were badly worn and brake fluid was pouring from them. I am not mechanic but he couldn't believe that I was driving this car around. When I arrived back home I called Bangor Car CAre and got no response. I called again the next day and the secretary gave me a run around. Then I called the next day and no response again. My husband finally called and they said they would call him back. The secretary called me instead of my husband at work which was the number left. She was trying desperately to intimidate me but when she realized that that would not happen she explained that the owner would agree to replace the brakes for about 30% out of his pocket. I said no thank you I have seen the kind of work your auto mechanics do and it should be dealt with by a lawyer if they were not going to pay. It seemed to that they broke the law somehow by claiming that the inspection sticker was leagal when they new they had used faulty parts.

I later that week took my car to VIP where they replaced everything to make it inspectable about 1300 dollars later; at least half of what I had paid for the car in the first place.

We contacted Bangor Car Care and they refused to return our call. I still have the parts from the car and the receipts of what they had to do with it and the auto mechanics comments. (which weren't good). But I never did anything with ammunition to get them into trouble. Reading this other ladies story prompted me to write so at least other people may not buy from them. I would STRONGLY recommend against ever doing business with this company. They are theives and very bad people who would allow a mother to drive her babies 9 mos and 2 years around in a car that could have lost its brakes at any time. I shudder at the thought of what could have happened. So remember just because they have a catchy commercial and lots of advertising does not make them trustworthy.

Bangor Car Care - A history of Ripping Consumers off.

AUTHOR: gtrahan - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, October 08, 2011

Dave,

I think you missed the point.

You shoud have done your home work on Bangor Car Care and your delivery of advice was very accusatory of the customer rather than going to the heart of the issue which is this dealership. You got hung up in the semantecs and clearly did not understand the real bottom line issue. This dealership is being investigated by the attorney General's office and is apparently the poster child for dealerships selling defective cars, and it is the dealership who should be on the hotspot, not this lady, who was clearly taken advantage of.  I am 58 years old, have always worked on my cars, and I could read between the lines of her complaint and understood what she was saying. Brake fluid leaking from a rotor?, if it was dripping off the rotor, then she was telling you what she saw, even though it must have originated and dripped down from a brake line.

They knowingly lied to their customer for financial gain. This young mother believed this dealership was dealing in good faith, as we all would expect if they are and want to stay in business, which unfortunateley is not the case. I would venture that she thought that there is consumer protection that would protect her from car dealers from doing this and prevent them from selling uninspected defective cars. This is a gross violation on the part of the dealership. Her mistake, as we all have and do make them through out our lives, is she trusted this dealership to sell what they advertised at a time she needed a good car.

Your adice at this point I would expect would be constructive pointing her to the Better Buisiness Burea web page , and links the State of Maine web site to see where her recourse is.

Not reprimanding her, but advice for the future,  dealing with car dealerships.

Just google Bangor Car Care.

AGs office handling several Bangor Car Care complaints as used car dealer expands

There have been 18 complaints accepted for mediation in the last 12 months, she said. Eight are unresolved, three have been resolved and there are seven in current mediation right now.

For a comparison, the Bangor Daily News asked Kielty to check two other large used car dealers in Maine to see how many complaints have been filed with the AGs office in the last year. She said one of them had just one complaint that needed to be resolved, while the other had none.

Please don't respond if you find a word mispelled. But I do appreciate constructive and useful comments rather than reprimands that I find baseless.

My 19 year old daughter just bought a car from Bangor Car Care and guess what?

Want a job? I need a mechanic to come with me to take a look at my vehicle. Everyone says "bring a mechanic when you look at a car". Where do you find a mechanic? They work during the week. I placed an AD in craigslist looking for one and no takers. I even offered $50 an hour just to go for a ride with me and look at a vehicle.. or they can take their own car, I'd pay gas.

So please advise, where do we get these "mechanics". They don't fall from the sky. The real good ones who own businesses think it's "bad business" to look at other dealer's cars. I called and asked my mechanic and he refused because of it. Small town politics.

Bangor/Lewiston Car Care......how do they sleep at night?

AUTHOR: Maineconsumer0829 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, February 28, 2008

I bought a 1997 ford sedan september of 2007. Wheel bearing went the first day and they replaced it with one just as bad and very worn out. I found this out when the bearing burnt out the hub and my mechanic charged me $300.00 to fix it.

It is this simple folks, you get what you pay for. Anything that looks to good to be true probably is. I gave the car back to them and put a stop on my bank account from Persian Financial (thier wonderful bak willing to "help" everyone with bad credit) and then I went out and paid cash for a 12 year old clunker i put a bit of money into here and there and keep it without a payment. With the Bangor Car Care (and its sister lots Lewiston and Westbrook) you get a clunker with a payment so why bother. Oh yeah, and you get to pay almost 20 % interest for like over two years.

Buyer beware, especially when it comes to this business here.

Father brake job at VIP included new brake shoes, drums, springs and a couple of wheel cylinders; all four wheels

AUTHOR: Tyrone - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, February 10, 2006

I am the father of Lynn. When Lynn came home with her car, she told me of her problems with her car. I took the tire and brake drum off. They were completly worn out. The brake shoes was metal to metal causing brake fluid to seep out. Apparently, when she took it back for repairs, they filled the drum with grease to stop the noise. They told her that they replaced the shoes and made the proper repairs. I have been around cars for quite some time and new shoes don't wear out @ 400 miles. When she bought the car, they put a new inspection sticker on the car. I belive the brake job at VIP included new brake shoes, drums, springs and a couple of wheel cylinders; all four wheels. The car took a lot of repairs to pass state inspection. My daughter is very smart but she is not a mechanic. But the extensive repairs that had to be made to make the car safe, including alignment and two new tires, were very expensive.

Dave, right on the money here!

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 06, 2006

My advice to Lynn is to never buy a car or get mechanical work done unless you take someone else with you that knows whats going on with cars!

Dave......

A $1300 brake job IS what she said. The tires, inspection and other repairs were NOT mentioned.

I sensed a bit of exaggeration there too, as I too have an automotive repair background. VIP saw her coming more than the car lot did!

I have a 95 Cougar, and I could replace all drums, rotors, pads, shoes, calipers, wheel cylinders, alignment and inspection AND a set of tires for less than $1300!

WOW, I'm in the wrong business!

Although I did like the one about the brake fluid pouring out of the [routers].

Unbelievable

Calm Down Already

AUTHOR: Dave - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 06, 2006

I am not calling you a liar, I just said that there has to be more to the story... Brake fluid doesn't come out of the rotors! period. Again, if brake fluid was pouring out of your car, you wouldn't have had ANY brakes. You are exaggerating. Probably had a substantial abount of drips from a leaky hose or caliper. And in your post, you stated $1300.00, and it sounded like a brake job because that is what you were talking about.

You didn't say they inspected it, you said they SAID it was inspectable. Big difference.

Yes, maybe they lied to you, but it is still your responsiblity to have a car checked before you buy!! Next time.

#4 Author of original report

Dave I think you didn't understand what I said

AUTHOR: Lynn - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, February 04, 2006

It is important for you to understand Dave that Bangor Car Care let me drive the car off the lot not once but twice with an illegal inspection (meaning there was an inspection sticker in the window and when we took it in for the brakes making the noise and not working well...pushing them to the floor in order to stop; they put a new inspeciton sticker on).

I don't appreciate that you are suggesting that I am lying and it is people like you who make others afraid to report consumers like Bangor Car Care who rip people off on a daily basis. I admitted that I made mistakes with this and that is why we let it go.

As far as the work we had done to the car I don't have to justify the price to you, but it was more than the brakes that were replaced. The tires needed to be replaced from not being balanced with the car out of alignment and there was a tie rod issue all things that go against the inspection. And does mis-spelling "rotor" suddenly make me a liar?

I am not sure why your comment was even allowed to be posted considering the fact that you had nothing constructful to say. It seems more that you attacked me without knowing what you are talking about.

Not Their Responsibility Lynn

AUTHOR: Dave - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, February 03, 2006

You purchased a used POS for $2900. And you didn't have it inspected?? Shame on you. If you had it looked at by an outside mechanic, the brake problem would've been addressed immediately.

Also, there are no 'routers', there are 'rotors', but they don't have brake fluid in them. Also, if brake fluid was 'pouring' out of your brakes, you wouldn't have been able to stop at all.. so stop exagerating and tell the truth.

$1300 for a brake job? VIP ripped you off. Considering you didn't buy a high-end car for $2900, I can assure you that $1300.00 is a major rip-off for brake work. Even if you replaced calipers and rotors and pads, maybe a brake hose, it wouldn't add up to half that.

Next time, have your car inspected before you buy!
