1st off let me just say, Bank of the West is not only a horrible company to work for, but they are a horrible company to have an account with. Before I get to my main complaint, let me fill you in on a day of working with the company. There are on a "hiring freeze," or at least that is what they tell us. So, don't call in sick, or think about taking a vacation, they are SO understaffed that it makes it horrible on the ones that show up everyday and do their job. Having to work 6 days out of the week for 3 of the 4 weeks in a month is unheard of in the banking world. Thats why most people work at a bank, to get weekends off, but no, not Bank of the West employees. So, basically, we are over worked, and we are NOT allowed any overtime pay.
My annual raise was combined with my promotion raise and it was a whopping total of 00.81 cents. 00.81 cents should have been my annual raise, and then another for becoming a manager... what a waste of raise. Plus we never got our 2 15 minute breaks that every full time, 8 hr work day, employee is supposed to get. So- heres what happened.
I am an ex-employee of Bank of the West, I was the Assistant Customer Service Manager. My last day was 05/18/07. My employee checking account was then changed to a Free Checking, for I was just a normal customer now. My boyfriend was on the account as well. He is the one that primarily uses the account for his childs' day care and child support. Which, by the way, ALL of the employees at that particular branch (Penn Plaza) knew that. I worked there for almost 2 years, they knew everything about the fact that the account was for those purposes.
An FYI: Every account at Bank of the West has, what they call, an "overdraft matrix." It is simply a matrix that the systems uses without the customers knowledge. It will allow items to be paid even if there is insufficient funds.
So, my account had be negative roughly 30 or some dollars, which I was aware of, but I knew that I had a $250.00 overdraft matrix (again the customer never knows this, but I worked there, so I knew), so I knew that I would just have to pay a overdraft fee. Well, my boyfriend, wrote a check for 130.00 to his daycare on May 28, 2007, fully aware that the account was negative. The matrix would have paid the check and just added an overdraft fee. He was to be paid from his work on 06/08/2007, which he was going to replenish our account. So, he wrote the check knowing that it would draw the account even more negative, and that he would receive another fee. So on Friday, 06/08/07, my boyfriend deposited 300.00 and I deposited 90.00 on 06/09/07, which covered what we were negative and then some. Well, my boyfriend gets a call from his day care on 06/11/07 saying his check was returned. Well, clearly it confused me because on the banks ETime Banker (where I can review my account) it showed that the check for 130.00 cleared on 06/01/2007. So I told my boyfriend that his daycare has to be mistaken, it cleared and the funds were taken, and there was nothing returned, via the online banking. So I call Penn Plaza (again I used to work there, I know how things run), and I speak with Michelle Whittington, the Customer Service Manager, she tells me that they did return the check. I ask how, since it shows that it cleared on 06/01/07. She tells me that it did clear, but then they reversed it and returned it on 06/04/07 because, and get this, because I was no longer employeed there and they were worried that I would not repay the account.
Okay, so had a been a "regular" customer, this is how this situation would have taken place. The check would have been paid, per the overdraft matrix, and there would have been an overdraft fee. Then I would have had 45 days to make my account positive again or it would have been charged off.
However, that did not happen. The check did clear, and a fee was given, but then, on the next business day, the branch manager Katie John gave the authority to reverse the transaction and return the item. So, although my boyfriend still needed to pay someone the 130.00, he now has a fee from our account and has to pay his daycare persons fee as well. For these managers to make it their personal action to contact someone on the next business day, after the transaction was completed and a done deal, is discrimination. This would have NEVER been done to a normal customer. They now have slandered my boyfriends personal character by making his seem like he can't pay his daycare and has to write hot checks. Then they have discriminated me because they did not treat me like a regular customer. They may be holding some type of grudge against me for resigning, I do not know. Nonetheless, it is WRONG! I have already discussed the matter with 2 other branch manager within the company and they both are in agreement with me and what they did was wrong, and that it was poor business. I will be going to the branch tomorrow to request that I get my fee reversed, and that they compensate me for having to pay the daycares fee as well. Also, I will request that Katie write a letter of apology to my boyfriends day care for making this an unnecessary inconvienence.
Stay away from working for this company and /or being their customer.

The matrix is "supose" to be bank info, howerver more than 1/2 the BoW customers know about it. PLUS... YOU know that the matrix can change at any time, without warning and is NOT an overdraft protection. BoW has several types of ODP, I'm assuming you didn't have money to put in a savings to cover it, or you didn't have good enough credit to get the line, or you wouldn't have had that problem.
Stop blaming the bank for your poor choices.

Why in the world would you do that?

Have you heard of cash advances? Why in the world would you try to use your overdraft matrix as an ex-employee. You said you know the system, then you should know that your account with the status change from employee to ex-employee would be treated like you got a brand new account with a zero overdraft matrix. I am glad you don't work there anymore, since you obviously can't even take care of your own finances. Sorry, no rip-off here.

I don't even know where to begin. You're obviously just a mess. You state above a number of times that you (or your boyfriend) knowingly wrote a bad check, and you're throwing a fit because you believe the bank owes it to you to cover your mistakes. This report lacks any and all logical thought process. This is completely asinine.
I know from personal experience that any given bank in the entire united states will clearly state in an employee hand book; that it is completely, and 100% unacceptable to overdraw an employee account. So, what in the world would lead you to believe that this would be acceptable behavior once employment has ended?
You've also stated that you were unhappy with your raises and advancement, it sounds to me that Bank of the West was unhappy with your performance. You made it your personal vendetta to, in your words slander Bank of the West and its employees. I see you used the first and last names of management at this particular location, what exactly would you call that?
My guess that you are probably just as responsible with your personal finances as you were when writing this less than adequate, and entirely inaccurate report. Please excuse my candidness when I tell you that, this is downright childish Laura. Don't attempt to pawn your personal responsibility to the bank. Having a checking account is a privilege. Abusing that privilege is not common practice in the responsible adult world!

WHY would they know this? Don't you have any respect for your boyfriend's privacy? Why would you tell everyone his business?
""They now have slandered my boyfriends personal character by making his seem like he can't pay his daycare and has to write hot checks.""
That is exactly what he did. He KNOWINGLY wrote a check when the account didn't have adequate funds. Your status changed from employee to "disgruntled ex-employee) so it seems reasonable to me that the bank would take actions to protect itself from loss.
Seems to me your boyfriend needs to have his OWN bank accounts and keep his finances separate from yours. Especially when there is child support monies involved.

You can't be serious.....

Wow for someone who "knows how things work" really has an interesting view.
First if you were an Assistant Customer Service Manager you were either a salaried or what is considered an essential hourly employee. As such there are no labor laws that require you to get any overtime pay. So even if you had to work 24 hours straight for 6 days guess what NO overtime. This does not only go for this company but any other person who is salaired. Now, you are supposed to get what is known as "comp" time on a 1 for 1 basis and if you did not get that, then you might have a case against them.
But the real interesting point was this "overdraft matrix". You first said "Well, my boyfriend, wrote a check for 130.00 to his daycare on May 28, 2007, fully aware that the account was negative. "
Then a few lines later you said "They now have slandered my boyfriends personal character by making his seem like he can't pay his daycare and has to write hot checks"
Okay so if he was FULLY AWARE that the account was negative he WAS writting a HOT check so how exactly did Bank of the West slander him for doing that exact thing?????? You can not call it slander when it is the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts.
A bit of reality would say that you might need to take a look at you and your boyfriends finances and work on not keeping a negative balance in your account rather than blaming a bank for your mistake.

The bank did not slander your boyfriend as he did write a hot check for his daycare.
Another thing tha may have happend is that when the account was changed form employee to free, it may have reset that matrix to where you didn't have a much leeway as you thought.
Sorry, don't think any discrimination or rip off occurred. you just tried to work the system and it didn't work as you thought it would.

Having a Bank Account Is a Privilege
AUTHOR: Anonymous - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Saturday, December 22, 2007
What this bank was doing was protecting themselves from suffering a loss from an individual who wrote a hot check. It is against the law to write a check when you don't have money in the account to cover the item. This is why almost every DA office has a bogus check writing unit. Having a bank account is a privilege and when you abuse your account they have the right to return your checks as NSF until you make a deposit to cover the items. A bank can close your account at anytime for financial abuse. Many banks will also close your account if you are a disruptive customer who likes to verbally abuse bank employees. Moral of the story is don't expect banks to help you out just because you were a former employee.

I agree, Bank of the West is the absolute worst company in the world to do business with. I had recently had my purse stolen along with my identification; I went into Bank of the West and they asked me for info that was on my signature card including my mother's maiden name. I gave it to them and they told me that was wrong. These people are the scum of the earth.

AUTHOR: Jackie - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Monday, June 18, 2007
I work for Bank of the West, and I just want to say that Bank of the West didn't slander your boyfriend's character by returning his checks. He DID write a "hot check", and the Bank is under no obligation to pay checks he wrote, when there were not funds in his account to cover those checks. I have seen many cases where a previous employee stops using the account, only to see it go negative, and get turned over to collection agencies. What your previous supervisors did was protect themselves and the Bank, and they owe you nothing because you used to work there.

the reason i used it was to avoid embarrassment. a bill needed to be paid, and that account is ONLY used for that bill. the money was not there and it needed to be paid. so to avoid the embarrassment of the check returning, i knew i had that COURTESY for the item to be paid. so no, it was not because is a trend, it was a legit need to avoid embarrassment, as you stated it, but it didnt work that way. people are back stabbing, unrespectful, hateful people. and those are the people working at bank of the west. that is why i am no longer there.

Now I know that I am getting REALLY OLD !!!!!!
AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Monday, June 11, 2007
This must truly be the "Entitlement Generation". A (former) bank employee who had been promoted to a more responsible position before resigning sees nothing wrong with writing a check against an overdrawn checking account. In my youth this was called "kiting a check" and was seriously frowned upon. But no more, I guess.
Re: "Every account at Bank of the West has, what they call, an "overdraft matrix." It is simply a matrix that the systems uses without the customers knowledge. It will allow items to be paid even if there is insufficient funds. "
So what was intended as a courtesy to help a customer avoid an occasional embarrassment has become an everyday entitlement! And a (former) bank employee thinks that the routine use of this feature is right and proper!
Well, Laura, your apparent comfort with your routine overdraft practices with your Bank of the West checking account are a sufficient guarantee that I would therefore NEVER use the services of this bank. And I have substantial relationships with several banks.
Times HAVE changed, have they not?
