I have been an employee for ten years at bjs wholesale club- i have watched with my eyes and listened with my ears for far too long. too many awesome people have lost their jobs to unfair practices- due to management. As a cashier you basically have to be 100% -accurate cash drawers,no over rings or under. Do not miss an item or double charge an item and not to mention all the other store policies that the rest of the employees endure-(supposably). If you violate any of these-in other words make a mistake- you MUST sign a paper stateing this and you are then violated with a WRITE-UP. If you happen to get 3 of these you receive a final- which is then turned into a termination. We count our drawer before our shift but do not count it when we are finished! This means the cash office is in total control of our money!! There was a memo from the cash office posted stateing- please count your drawer before starting your shift-as we are only human and can make mistakes... do you believe that! How can the cash office not be held accountable for their part in the wholesale company. This is not in the best interest of their employees and they know it. That is why if you are terminated they are not held responsible for your actions and you cannot get help with unemployment insurance!! Their policy book also states if they see you falling behind that they will do everything possible to help and they will offer training and support you need to be successful. They did none of this for myself. I went thru some terrible family issues on my final and nobody listened or helped! I am a ten year veteran and deserved some grattitude- not even what a great job you have done for this company..and believe me the customers are calling my residence and stopping by my house because there was an injustice to the MEMBERS are cared so much for. There are also team members that have had their write ups dismissed and that clearly breaks our policy- why didint mine get excused? Because i dont kiss butt and suck up to management- its about my service to the consumer and not stepping on the heels of others to get there! Home Office will be getting quite of few calls from my supporters and that is the people who SUPPORT the club financially! Any comments please contact me cus it doesnt stop here! thank you

I dont know what world you exist in but i was brought up to know my neighbor and help them- thats basically my job title. A cashier helps and assists in anyway and that includes being social and keeping the line moving. Most of us are capable of doing both -jackwagon. We also have socialization in the store and if you are a nice ,cheerful, and helpful person you will be addressed by the customer. Unless you are a mean miserable person....? You could get written up if you are that way-right! I didnt comment on my write ups because i didnt get your mail until now and was really enjoying myself talking to ashley- whom gave me a different outlook on the situation. So i was written up for 1. missed a case of beer- my fault. should have double checked my 200th receipt for the day. will comment on that because it was rang up but you have to press key 1 to say yes to the purchase and key 2 for no. well the keys are right next to each other and i missed the key applying more pressure to key2. a month later i missed a package of chips- my mistake. u see when you get huge loads you have to repack the next cart and if you have alot you use another cart to put delicate items out of the way. I put the chips to the side and didnt ring it before placing then gently and carefully on top. the third was a 20 dollar shortage- my mistake . that was my day of struggle and usually double and triple count my money. Easy mistake when you handle so much money each day. Kinda like when you go to the bank and they make a mistake once in awhile too. Or when the money sticks- ever get those?
We have a policy book which like ive repeated before -they will help us get back on track and if anyone knows about being on a final- they will put you in a different area of the store until the 90days has gone by. I fortunately never had that happen before and like i said before- i have helped alot of other employees get thru it also. I will tell you though- it was a breath of fresh air to leave the door. I can finally find a career to help people and maybe find loopholes in corporate policies to help the bullshit that goes on. I also live near hometown and that is why so many people have fought for me. love ya man and thanks for trying to wreck my day- BUT YOU DIDNT!
by the way-the rules must apply to everyone- that includes the store butt kissers and suck ups....is that you?

Every time you are asked specific questions you don't answer them. Instead you talk about how they are unfair and how bad the OTHER employees are. So I will ask this again..
What were you written up for?
What assistance did you want them to provide?
As to some more of your additional comments...
if we have to be thorough and double check our work- the rest of them should be held accountable for their mistakes also.
- You must have been the designated "busy-body". How else could you explain that you, as a cashier, knew for 100% certain that people in the other departments were never held accountable for their mistakes?
And yes some employees received special treatment
- Welcome to the real world of "office politics"
I really valued my job and have customers calling my home and writing myself and home office.
- Again even though I really have no doubt that you are exaggerating this. If in fact you were this wonderful of an employee it sounds like you could walk into ANY business and the management would be on their knees begging for you to work for them. So I don't even know why you would need to deal with unemployment.

the policy is quite tuff- if you have a write up you have it for 90 days- so if you get another one before the 90 day span it all starts over again. the first one is stuck with you for another 90 days. it all comes down to fileing for unemployment-you are disqualified because they call it a deliberate company policy. Im sorry but i really find that not acceptable to someone who made a mistake. you see most of the items at bjs are over 10 bucks so if you miss one or hit an incorrect key you better be ready for a write up. yes you do get 3 chances but it is really heart breaking to see people you care about get fired for 20 bucks. a box of chips and whatever else. As far as other depts. receiving a different set of rules is ridiculous. if we have to be thorough and double check our work- the rest of them should be held accountable for their mistakes also. And yes some employees received special treatment- their cash register mistakes magically disappear. I really valued my job and have customers calling my home and writing myself and home office. It was a great experience meeting ,making friends and having my regulars for many years. it was hurtful when they came in week after week and told me their loved ones had passed. I have no regrets -but i am not a butt kisser but i do fight for the underdog.....the corporate world of greed sucks

Really?

I have a few regular stores I go to and while I am familiar with some employees their job is to help customers and I never just sit there and talk to them. But in a Warehouse/Big Box type of store where it is unlikely that the Cashiers are just standing around, I would actually get upset at the Cashier if they were chatting with the customers instead of ringing them up.
The reason I bring this up is because while I may find it possible that customers would wonder why a particular employee is no longer working, and may make a comment in the store that they missed you. I don't see a person who you only knew as a customer to not only go out of their way to call you at your house(how would they get your number) but to stop by your house(how would they get your address) showing support for you when you got fired.
So one has to wonder if you are exaggerating this, what else might you be exaggerating or leaving out? If you are being 100% truthful then one has to wonder if you were this good why were you still a cashier after 10 years?
You talk about the "heart" and your personal problems. You also talk about how they say they would help you if you keep getting written up. Well again one would expect that that help is in the form of training on policies and procedures for the issues you got written up for, which after 10 years one would figure that you pretty much should have down. I would not expect, as you are inferring, that they are required to help you with your personal problems.
So what help were you looking for them to provide?
Did they offer some form of psychological services(such as counseling). If so did you take them up on this? Did you request additional time off to take care of issues at home? If so what did they say? Did you request a different shift? If so what was their response?
Or is this a case where your "problems" were justification for your errors and they should just continue to let them slide until you get your act together. By the way you never did answer the question as to what you got written up for.

Forgets about the heart?

From your explanation it sounds like you want BJ's to write up/fire people in their own cash office and meat department also. Which is irrelevant to your case anyhow. Neither of those areas are the department in which you work in. Having been management at a grocery store, rules were different for cashiers, stockers, deli, meat, dairy, etc. While someone who misprices something may not get them in trouble, being 5$ short on a cash drawer might get you written up. The rules between departments don't have to be equivalent to be fair. What matters is did BJ's policy for cashiers get handled the same for all the cashiers? I do have a heart, but how many times should a company let you mess up before firing you? 3? 4? 5?

hey ashley- you made a good point -and yes your register should be 100%- like mine has been for ten years. that is why i stated in their policy -when they see you falling behind ,they will help in anyway to get you back on track. when i received my third violation- that is when you step in and help. Especially knowing the employee for that amount of time and hiring cashiers is a huge turn over process for this company- which we all know can be even more costly! I also asked for help and nobody assisted. Furthermore- A cash office that posted-"count your drawer before your shift because we are only human and make mistakes"- in my eyes is unacceptable . We have to be 100%- but the cash office does not? The girls who work in the cash office have openly talked about their screw ups. There are mistakes in their world! What i am saying is those people need to have write ups also. I found alot of "mistakes" in the meat department also- they priced meat with wrong prices and nobody was ever prosecuted! Arent those mistakes Ashley- really we have families and lives too. And yes personal problems what i went thru that short period in my life do affect your working ability and someone should have cared enough to assist. I had great customer relations with my members and did more for them than management. You also need to enforce your violations to everyone and not make them disappear for your favorites. That has been going on for quite sometime- and other employees have spoken to me about it and continue to. thanks for your concern ashley- i see you are another person of the world who forgets about the heart...

Their unfair policy, for cashiers, is that they expect their cashiers to ring up customers correctly and make correct change? They also expect your cash drawer to not be short, am I understanding correctly? These sound like reasonable requests. In fact, the only thing you list that seems unfair is that the cashers do not count their own drawers down at the end of their shift. Having run the cash room at a large grocery store, I expected the cashers to count their money before I did in order to have independant verification of the funds. Of course, they aren't required to let you it just sounds pretty crappy. Also, you say they have a policy to help you if they see you falling behind. I would assume this would be work related correct? were you expecting the company to help you with your family problems?
What exactly were your write ups for?
