According to the new insurance reform laws that were recently passed, colonoscopies are considered preventative care and are supposed to be covered for free by health insurance. Well, the insurance ripoff companies have found a loop hole. If the patient (me in my case) has polyps removed, the insurance ripoff companies will not pay for it all.
They say that the procedure must be billed with a routine diagnosis not a medical diagnosis in order to be processed under the wellness benefit". I called the medical center that did the work, and they said that they had to bill it that way. I also see that the ins. company doesn't pay the doctors for all that they bill for. Either way, the law says that colonoscopies are supposed to free under the insurance reform law and covered by ins. companies. My health ins. company is a rip off who won't pay for the procedure and would rather I die!
As it is now, I'm having to borrow almost $500 dollars to pay the medical bills. My doctor recommends a colonoscopy every 5 yrs., but I'll go every 10 yrs. if I can't afford to pay for the bills. I believe in paying my fair share, but the ins. ripoff companies are in it for the money only! All they care about the money they make!! We need single payer health care so that the health ins. companies will think twice about charging high premiums and hording the money instead of paying what they are supposed to.

My BC BS colonoscopy experience
AUTHOR: tw1333 - (United States of America)

I didn't mean to file a 'rebuttal' but didn't see an option to comment. My BS BC 'provider' told me for years that they would not just cover colonoscopy preventative care, and they didn't care if top doctors in the nation were saying it was necessary after age 50. Jerks they are. I rarely use the insurance as my health has been good, but I pay them my $450/mo for single, personal care insurance. Then I got a new doctor who was more pro-active and he said we'll get it done. What you need is an indication. In a subsequent visit he asked me some routine questions and one of those questions was "have you ever had any kind blood in your stool?" Of course I have, who hasn't? He wrote it down and made some notes. I had the procedure and the insurance company paid their protion and I paid the copay. Saved me $1500 bucks.
Gotta be a player in this game I guess.

Did you get back a copy of your claim??

Did you get a copy of your claim from BCBS??? When they send it to you there should be something stating how much the doctor charged, How much they paid, and the amount you were responsible for paying.
Most of the time the insurance just bills the way the doctors office submits the claim. Call the physicians office that billed you and have them resubmit the bill correcting the error.... Last I heard a physician will ALWAYS remove any polyps to see if they are benign or malignant and let you know the results. I have BCBS and have never had a problem with them paying my claims.

How much was covered?
AUTHOR: Steve - (USA)
SUBMITTED: Saturday, January 14, 2012
To the OP - did the insurance company cover it at all? How much did they cover? $500 sounds like a lot of money for you to pay if they covered a portion of it, but I don't know how much the procedure costs?
And out of curiosity, why DO you have such a hard time with spelling Stacey's name correctly? I mean, it is an easy, honest mistake (there are many ways to spell the name), but it sounds like this crowd has corrected you repeatedly.

Charles,
The letter E falls between the letters D and F in the alphabet. It's located between the letters W and R on your keyboard. Now you know.

Stacy is a coward who can't handle what she dishes out. I like to expose the person stacy really is she isn't a kind person at all well i'm not the only one who can see threw stacy. Ken is just like her.

My mother died of this nasty cancer at 58 years of age and my Dr. says it's particularly important for me to keep to the 5 year interval. I get a reminder post card from him every 5 years. I have also had polyps removed.
As a male, I also have a prostate exam done at the same time.
I hope the OP will re-consider his position as if his life depended on it....it just may.
Also glad to try to help Charles spell your name right, Stacey, but I forgot who/what I was dealing with....no hopes, unfortunately. He just keeps crawling out of Mom's basement and getting on the computer.

Thanks Ken appreciate that and to CHARLES - no one in the report said anything about you nor cares for you so go ask Mommy to change your diaper. You still are too ignorant to even spell my name right MORON.
Always get a colonscopy at least every five years regardless for preventive health. It is better to do so as I do - the cost maybe high but in the long run it is cheaper than cancer treatments.

It sounds as though you are trying to ripoff your insurance company by asking your health provider to lie and say your treatment is preventive care when you have had a medical diagnosis.

Why do people support getting shafted? Do your own searches, laziness. I assure you, it's out there.
BTW, I am NOT an Obama supporter and the push for all to buy health ins. is not a good idea. Having said that, The wording of the law is very clear, but the medical profession and health insurance industry know exactly how to play on words. I only wish that receiving medical care didn't screw the patient and everyone was paid a fair fee for services rendered. Sad that some of you love it in the rear (pun intended).

You Need to Go Every 5 years
AUTHOR: Jim S - (United States of America)
SUBMITTED: Friday, January 13, 2012
You have polyps you fool. If you go every 10 years, you're likely to be dead of cancer sooner and if you complain about the cost of care now, try getting colon cancer, something if found early..is treatable. I am always amazed by people who complain about the cost of a colonoscopy and complain about paying for polyp removal. Would you rather have cancer and die?? It sure sounds like it.
Please don't talk about offering to pay your fair share. You couldn't afford the tax to have single payer because single payer does nothing to reduce the cost of care.

See, it's not too hard to add an E in the name.

In your case the colonoscopy is not for preventative care. A colonoscopy for preventative means would be a routine colonoscopy that people have every 5 years just to make sure everything is fine. You have a medical issue and had to have a colonoscopy above and beyond preventative care, it was in the treatment of polyps. That's why it wasn't covered the same. It happens for just abot any procedure. For example, my dental insurance says I get 2 visits a year for cleanings and x-rays for preventative means. My dentist observed that I am having some gum issues and he moved me up to 4 cleanings a year. Only 2 will be covered 100% by the insurance, I'm on the hook for the other 2. That's just how things work.
BTW: This new health care law was designed to help insurance companies. It shuold actually increase their profits since people will be required to purchase health insurance and the companies can charge whatever they like as premiums.

Please post the Law that states that this procedure is to be covered 100%. My last procedure was only covered 90% after deductable and the hospital I went to was one the company I worked for owned so they picked up the other 10% according to Company Policy.
Last time I looked at my policy the only thing that was covered was wellness and physical exams.

Please provide a link to the law requiring colonoscopies are "Free"...
AUTHOR: Ken - (USA)
SUBMITTED: Thursday, January 12, 2012
Sure wasn't aware they are free, just "covered."
"My health ins. company is a rip off who won't pay for the procedure and would rather I die!"
My supplemental insurance, even after Medicare, only pays an agreed to portion of my colonoscopies, but I don't think they're wishing me dead because of it.
"I believe in paying my fair share, but the ins. ripoff companies are in it for the money only! All they care about the money they make!! We need single payer health care so that the health ins. companies will think twice about charging high premiums and hording the money instead of paying what they are supposed to."
The health insurance industry, on average, makes a profit margin of 3.3%...86th on a list of other companies. If that's all I made on MY investment, I'd hoard it too.
Distilled spirits companies margin is over 25%.
Here's a thought, if health insurance paid the full amount for ANY procedure, it wouldn't be long at all until premiums rose so high NOBODY could afford them. I don't mind my insurance being careful on their payment decisions. When I've disagreed and written my position to them, I've generally prevailed.
