Thank you Rip Off report and Kaila for posting this detailed account of your experience with this company!
My wife has been out of work for quite awhile now like many others in Michigan. As a family we have burned through our savings and retirement trying to stay out of debt and on the level and things have become dire.
She has been searching many job posting sites and stumbled across this little gem posted on Craigslist:
Fast growing company is looking for the right Customer Service Rep to grow with us. We will train the right person. Personality is a plus.....must enjoy talking with people face to face. Please send resume to humanresources00@hotmail.com attn: Larry or Lisa or call us at 248.377.8811 ask for Larissa
My wife is not very tech savvy. She has 15 years experience in the dental field, but doesn't spend a lot of time online. So she didn't realize that any company posting job listing with a free web domain email address should be suspect.
So she called and wouldn't you know it, was scheduled for an interview the very next day! When she asked what the company name was, she was told "CanAm systems" (which is an actual IT consulting company out of New Jersey) but could not get any more detailed information about what the job is
My wife was very proud to have gotten an interview after weeks of fruitless job searching. She thought for sure this could be something worth checking out.
She also knew that with any interview, research about your prospective employer is key. Be knowledgeable about what they do and how you can make a good addition to their team. Here is where the story starts to fall apart.
After realizing CanAm systems is a NJ based tech consulting firm, she thought she had misunderstood "Larissa", so we began doing some research.
The address given for the interview turned up MANY job post listings on sites like Craigslist, CareerBuilder, and Monster just to name a few. This company is also posting these ads under a variety of names including Alonti International, Inc. , BOSS Advertising, and Manager Universal Marketing Group, Inc.
Suddenly I thought, "Wow, the 419 scammers have gone local!".
Then we came across RIP OFF report and the fog lifted! We finally saw who employs the people that knock on our door wanting us to "Help the kids" or run up to us in the parking lot and ask us to "Support the community".
And to the people posting that "They don't do anything wrong, they offer a job to people who need it. Its not for everyone" I agree completely. Its a matter of numbers. If they get 250 desperate people willing to put up with this for a day and milk them for car rides and free labor only to have 1 or 2 actually come back hoping to make their fortune doing this job every day, then they can consider it a win.
It must be getting harder to pull barely legal stuff like this though. Research and questions and info like that posted here saved my family the money and humiliation of actually walking into this trap.
Thanks RIP OFF REPORT!
