I went on my first-ever across-the-ocean vacation in June and rented a car through Budget. At the terminal, the car rental agent asked if I wanted car insurance. I said no. He tried to pressure me and I again said no. He would not let me sign the contract since I was not the driver, but he gladly let me pay the bill once the contract was signed. Let me add that he was Irish, and speaking quite rapidly.
Back at home, I received a bill for car insurance! Looking over my paperwork, my driver had initialed the boxes for insurance. I asked him why he did that, and he said the rental man had said "sign here, initial here" and he did, not reading what he signed because he had heard me say that I did not want car insurance. Now I am mad, knowing that the rental man did this behind my back. I contacted Budget, and they said they could not reimburse me because the boxes were checked and initialed, and all was in order.
Now ensued a long period of letters and emails, explaining what happened, and that I felt I had been bamboozeled, an unwitting American tourist. The Oklahoma postition was that they could not go on my report of the conversation at the rental booth. Okay, now they have called me a liar, too!
I never used the insurance, and we went the whole trip driving as if we had none. The last letter from Amanda Ross, Customer Care Representative, stated that "the charges remain correct and we have now closed our customer service file. We trust you will understand our position." She never answered my last question to her, which was "How would you feel if this happened to you?" This was an unwanted charge, and it isn't about the money anymore - this is about justice for your own countryman!

Ireland is a nightmare to drive in

This is a country which prides itself in drinking, fighting, and drive-by's using mortars. The road rage is unreal. Buying insurance with the rental car is a definite YES when asked.

Moral of the story, Look before you leap. Regardless of what the agent did or did not, it was the signer's responsibility to see what they were signing. Also, why weren't you watching what he was doing?

Ireland?

Ireland is world-renown as a very dangerous place to drive. The rental car insurance included by VISA or Mastercard which works in most foreign countries doesn't cover you there. Probably your own US issued car insurance won't either. It would be a very good idea to buy insurance that will cover you.
The person paying should fill out, double check, and sign the contract, after all they are paying. Add the other person as an authorized driver. You are not obligated to pay that insurance bill if you didn't sign anything. However, your friend is.
