Cabela's Cabela's Hates Nevadan's Reno Nevada Nationwide

Welcome to this week's Reno News & Review.

Last week, I got all heated up over a corporation, Cabela's, firing an employee for placing an ad for an event in this newspaper. I became conflicted because I was writing about a rumor, which in retrospect, seemed beneath me and beneath this newspaper's standards. Essentially, the man was fired because this newspaper wasn't deemed family enough to be associated with the corporate brand.

Now I've spoken with or emailed both the guy who was fired and Cabela's, and I at least understand the company's rationale, even though I think was wrong and stupid. I've had a long relationship with Cabela's. For years, my son and I used to buy grandpa and grandma gift certificates to Cabela's.

So it only seemed appropriate when their marketing people decided to reach out to our readers. Our readersyou know, you and your families at the schools, in the churches, in the bars and galleries and bookstores and libraries. You're not family enough? I beg to differ.

Well, Cabela's can kiss my family's money goodbye. This is a perfect example of headquarters not caring about local people. This company has the gall to take my tax dollars through STAR bonds and then fire my neighbor? So what's this guy's family going to do? What is your family going to do now that his family's money isn't circulating?

Cabela's will never see another dime of my money. Period. There are other sporting goods stores in town.

Cabela's, for its part, declined to discuss details of an internal matter. However, wrote a company spokesperson, I can tell you the decision was based on company policy, not on the Reno News & Review, its content or readership.

That's their story, and yet, another person in Reno is without a job.
