When purchasing my brand new car in 2008, the dealer - Lee Johnson Kirkland, WA - knew I planned on keeping my vehicle for an extended period of time, so they encouraged me to purchase protection for the paint and finish on the vehicle.  Protection that was to help me keep my new car looking new, long after the new car smell was gone.

Mistake!  I purchased the highest level of protection available.  Fast forward to 2012.  The car has about 20,000 miles and the paint is coming off on the hood.  Not fading, but coming off.  Knowing I have this amazing protection from Cal-Tex, I contact the dealer who informs me I have to work with Cal-Tex to file a claim first.

I contact Cal-Tex who explains to me that prior to doing anything, I have to send them pictures and they will determine whether or not anything can be done.  So I go out of my way to get them digital pictures.  They call me back and tell me that they do not cover that and I am out of luck.

This car has not been in an accident, nor is there any way the paint could be skinned off the hood from abuse, exactly what do these protective coatings protect?  Based on my experience not a bloody thing.  Basically it is a complete rip-off where they get the dealer to sell you something that doesn't work.

Ripped off?  Yes.  Don't buy anything from Cal-Tex they won't stand behind you and they will just push you around when you try to collect on the protection you 'thought' you were buying.

Cal-Tex Response

AUTHOR: CalTexClaims - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, October 12, 2012

I would like to first apologize for the claims experience you had with our company. We strive to make sure that we cover every claim possible, and when not possible make sure that our customer's understand exactly why coverage is not available. I
can see from your post that we did not do a good job of explaining to you why coverage was not available.

While I am not able to locate your specific claim based on the limited information below, I would like to offer some explanation from some of the details you shared. I would also like to make sure that you have my contact information in the event you would like to discuss this further.

Peeling, cracking, and chipping paint are listed as exclusions on almost every warranty we have. We are required to show efficacy of our product to protect against any of the damage we cover in our warranty. Failure of that changes our
coverage from a product warranty into insurance. We are a company built on integrity, and work very hard to stay within the scope of what our state and federal guidelines require us to. The type of damage that I listed above is in most cases caused by impact, collision, or a reaction between the layers of your paint. As your post stated, the damage that you had was missing paint and not fading and that is listed in almost every warranty as exclusions for the reasons listed above.

One thing we have noticed in the 30 years that we have been in business is that our customers are not always "paint experts". We have seen in the past that damage reported by our customer can be communicated incorrectly by no
fault of our customer. We ask for pictures to make sure that what our customer's say is actually what is happening with their paint. Sometimes we find that the damage is a covered item after all, even though it is reported as something that would on the report alone be denied. We have made it our policy to not deny claims just on the report alone when at all possible.

The information above most likely does not address all of the aspects of your claim. Please contact me at 210-871-7308 if you would like to discuss this further. I would be glad to do everything I can to make sure that your claim is looked at fairly and with integrity. Our company takes our customer's concerns very seriously and I would be glad to do what is within the scope of the warranty and guidelines to help you.

Thank you,
Jarrod Albergaria
