On 2 Feb 2011, my heater for my house stopped functioning. Since the temperature outside went down to 25 degrees Fahrenheit, it was cold in the house. I tried to contact capital home shield, since I had signed and paid for a contract for 2 years ($424.00). They sent me paperwork and assigned me Policy ------ on 8-25-2010.

I first attempted the phone number given and got a busy signal three times. On my 4th attempt, the operator came on and stated that the number was disconnected. I got to the website, it indicated that they were having problems with their phone system.

So I tried the email address and stated my concerns and asked them to contact me. Needless to say, they never responded. I tried several times with no success.

I finally could wait no longer and called out a heater repair company. They came out and charged me $509.00 to fix my system. This came out of pocket, of course. I tried several more times to contact Capital Home Shield with no luck.

So now I am out of pocket $933.00. I looked on the internet and found ripoff.com and decided to let everybody know that they should definitely stay away from Capital Home Shield, unless they just want to throw their money away, which if they did, I would be glad to accept any contributions toward my bills.

Next time, keep two things in mind:
1. Home and car warranties are ALWAYS, without exception, a complete rip-off.  Put the money you would have spent on the warranty into a savings account.  If you think other companies are better: they are not.
2. This particular "company" is nothing but a simple scam.  Their address is a forwarding mailbox, and they process payments through a third party.  Their domain name is registered through DomainsByProxy.   If that doesn't scream "SCAM", I don't know what does.

In this day and age, there is no excuse for falling for these scams.  You should always know who you are dealing with.  Any company should have an office address listed on their website.  Plug it into Google Maps and check if it looks like you would expect, or if it's an empty lot or a mailbox store in a strip mall.  Call their phone number, and see who answers.  Google their name, and try to find reviews.  This takes 5 minutes, max, and takes care of 95% of scams.  Obviously, never buy insurance from small or poorly-established companies.  Even if they are totally, 100% honest, they could still go out of business a week after you buy a policy.
