This dealership does not honor waranty cliams on there vehicles. They advertise 10 year/100,000 mile waranty. My 2003 elantra with 86,000 miles on it has been well maintained with detailed service records. Then the engine and radiator failed I had it towed to this dealership to be repaired, and was quoted a 90 dollar fee to diagnose the problem.

3 days later I was told the engine had failed, they were tearing it appart to determine the cause of failure and file a claim with the corprate office for the waranty service. After another 5 days have passed I was informed they were still unable to determine the cause of failure but knew it was not the radiator hoses or thermostat, and they believed the car ran out of coolant. This car was serviced just 5 days before it failed, had it's oil change performed and coolant levels were checked at that time. After providing this papaerwork and information to there service center I was informed that they will re examine the car but not they need an additional 90 dollars. They would be scoping the engine to determine the exact cause of failure and resubmit the waranty claim. (I've now been without a vehcile for almost 2 weeks).

After re-examining the vehicle I have now been told the thermostat failed and that was the cause of failure for the engine and radiator. And that this internal engine part is not covered under there waranty and will be nearly $3000 to repair. They have now requested an addition $180 dollars to perform more inspections on the car and try to process the waranty claim yet again. I presently have a half assembled vehicle in there shop where they have told me they will need to charge me extra to reassemble it, have not provided a detailed list of which companants have failed, and are not 100% certain of the true cause of failure. They have just decided they do not want to cover it under waranty.

Do you mean "Work With" as in pay for the car and ignore the scam warranty?

I have been in this situation

So we have a customer that won't "work with" the dealer to resolve this, the dealer reps that give miss-information, the dealer and the manufacturer that can't agree on an explanation. And the last straw everybody digs into their position and starts hurling abuse, and trust me if what is written here is true it happened even if the sides didn't hear it. The only really interesting thing is that the customer is correct in one thing, the thermostat jamming open would not cause this damage, jamming partially open maybe but not completely open. I would request the photos of the part or to examine the thermostat my self. By the way removing a thermostat is risky, some engines will cool some wont.

I'm a Master Mechanic, they're lying to you

If the thermostat had stuck in the OPEN position, as they claim, there would be NO DAMAGE AT ALL, this would make the engine run cold, not hot

On the other hand, if there were a serious engine failure, such as a bad head gasket, or a timing chain/belt failure, the thermostat would be stuck open, the proof they've lied is that they are claiming exactly the reverse.

I'm going to assume they're telling the truth about the thermostat being stuck open, that's damning evidence and you MUST either get an admission on tape or writing they did indeed say that, if you can get that statement you can sue them out of buisness for both fraud and incompetence.

Good luck

Poor customer service.

1) I contacted Hyundai's corporate office, and was told the service manager at the dealership has ultimate say in weather or not this would be covered under waranty. I can provide the name, phone number, extension, and email address of the gentleman I spoke to at your corporate office.

2) I was first told the thermostat had not failed, then more then a week later this was changed to be the cause of the problem. First how did you get this wrong in the first place and tell me it was not the cause of the problem and that it was working properly. Why did it take you more then a week to determine the thermostat failed ? Why did it take 2 diagnostic fee's to tell me the thermostat failed ? I was told the thermostat stuck int he open position, I don't belive this condition would cause the vehicle to overheat in the manner it did. People have been known to completly remove thermostat's from vehicles to improve cooling.

3) The paperwork your shop provided when the vehicle was picked up did not state conclusivly the thermostat was the cause of this failure. I was not provided with a repair cost even after several requests. I also requested information concerning trading in this vehicle to your dealership. I was pushed aside for several weeks your salesman and service center did not return my calls. In the end I needed to purchase a vehicle from a different dealership since your employees were unable to assist me, and did not desire my business.

Dealer Response

AUTHOR: DP - (United States of America)

Unfortunately, the dealership is at the manufacturer's mercy. The manufacturer is the one who approves all warranty claims and they have policies and procedures which must be adhered to. The vehicle in question was overheated to the point of causing major engine damage. As a business, any additional work or diagnosis must be authorized by the customer before work is performed. What the customer does not understand here is that the failed component, the "Thermostat" is not covered under the powertrain warranty. It is a 5 year 60,000 mile component. We were working with Hyundai to get some kind of goodwill, possibly the complete repair as long as the customer aggreed to further diagnose to determine what needed to be replaced or repaired. The customer would not authorize any more teardown to determine what needed to be replaced. The customer backed out and we could not fight the fight with the manufacturer.
