I received a call on my cell phone 2005 saying I had won a trip for two. They said, as part of the trip prize I was also eligible to receive a magazine subscription to 5 magazines of my choice for $16/mo and that they had gotten my name from my credit card company (Discover) and would I like the magazines. We went through the payment method and they said it would be 16$/mo but they would bill a few months at a time so it would be $49 every 3 months. But I have been receiving bills EVERY month for $50. I have not received one magazine, nor have I received the supposed trip. I also called my credit card company after talking to the Community Reading Club and they said they did not give my information to this company nor do they work with them. The company said I could cancel the 'subscription' but I would have to pay over $1,000! I have filed a dispute with them through my credit card company, the Better Business Bureau, and Federal Trade Commission.

They have supposedly 'cancelled' my subscription after I threatened legal action, but only my next credit card bill will show if they indeed cancelled or if they are going to be dishonest on that front too. STAY AWAY from these guys! Also it is illegal for any company to say you won a trip first and then try to sell you something second - so any company that contacts you saying you've won anything and then tries to get you to 'subscribe' to something is already breaking the law.

Got my $ back!

AUTHOR: Clara - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, October 03, 2005

Okay so I had tried to get the subscription cancelled and after speaking with a rep on the phone and calmly repeating over and over 'no that is not acceptable' to her demands that I pay over $1,000 to get out of the contract she finally relented and cancelled the order.
I then immediately called my credit card and told them of the charges and the issue. They issued credits to my account equal to what CRC charged. I then sent notices to the Federal Trade Commission (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/tmarkg/magzn.htm) they deal with magazine scams as well as to the Better Business Bureau (http://complaint.bbb.org/).
I received a check for the full amount today and an email from the BBB saying they had contacted CRC on my behalf about the complaint. If I hadn't contacted the BBB I would have never got my $ back. So contact your local BBB about these scammers and get your money back!! Don't put up with their bad business tactics. If I had left it alone they would have kept billing me over and over and would have kept my money.
