 I was referred to this page by Corrie Wood who saw my post on DeVry’s Facebook page. Please forgive me if my story seems a bit jumbled, as I am still very upset as I am writing it. She directed me to this page and told me to tell my story, so here goes... I am an honors graduate of DeVry (February 2012), with a bachelors in Computer Information Systems, specializing in systems security and web design. When I enrolled in DeVry in late 2008, I was told the employment rate after graduation was 96%. Upon enrolling at DeVry, my advisor told me that DeVry had many partnerships, with many companies, to allow easy job placement after graduation. She also stated that with so many DeVry campuses all over the U.S., I would have no issues gaining employment after graduation, no matter where I lived in the U.S. I was also told by my advisor when I enrolled, that DeVry would make sure that I had the certifications and qualifications I needed to gain employment in my field of study after graduation. I also made it abundantly clear to my advisor before enrolling, that I am a military dependent, my wife is active duty, and we move at lot. She all but guaranteed me that DeVry was used to this sort of situation, it would not be a problem and DeVry supports and caters to not only military active duty, but military dependents as well. She also stressed that DeVry goes the extra mile to help military members succeed, not only during their DeVry career, but also after graduation. DeVry seemed like it was the perfect school for me to attend. Now, fast forward to my semester before graduation. I inquired about testing and certifications that I was promised when I enrolled.

I was then told by my advisor that testing/certs were something I had to do on my own and it was not DeVry’s responsibility. I was a bit upset that I was lied to during enrollment, but my advisor all but guaranteed that DeVry would still be able to help me find employment which would help me to get certified as well. Well long story short, I graduated with honors and after graduation I was put in contact with DeVry job services in San Antonio, Texas...I lived in Corpus Christi, TX at the time. After a bunch of emails and filling out a lot more paperwork, the DeVry job services agent in San Antonio told me that she was sorry, but DeVry could not offer to help me find employment in my area (I have the emails). She stated, that unless I was willing to relocate my family half way across the state of Texas, that DeVry could not help me find employment at all. Relocating is not an option for me, like I explained to DeVry when I enrolled, because my wife is active duty military and the military decides where and when we live places, not us. Well, now almost 2 years after graduation, every single job interview I have had, I have been told that though I have a very nice degree, but I lack the proper qualifications to become gainfully employed. Now we have been stationed in Guam and if DeVry couldn't help me gain employment in the mainland, I already know what the answer will be without even wasting my time asking DeVry to help me to find a job in Guam. The most frustrating part of all of this is when looking for a job myself in IT, I am continually told the same thing, that in order to gain employment in any systems security jobs, I need certifications. When I inquire about gaining certifications through employment, all the jobs tell me that my school should have offered them to me as part of my education and they have never heard of any accredited school NOT offering certifications to their students!! I feel like I was taken advantage of and bold faced lied to. Now I am stuck with about $60,000 in deferred student loans, which I cannot afford to even pay the interest on, taking care of a family of four on one income (my wife’s) and I am unemployed STILL with no hope at the end of the tunnel!! Now I have to find out how to become certified myself, but cannot afford to take the certifications, much less, I do not even feel DeVry prepared me properly to enter into the job market into my field of study!!! Thanks DeVry University...Thanks a lot for really sticking it to me as a civilian, but even worse, as a military dependent too!!
