I made the mistake of believing what the DirecTV salesperson told me. He said that the amount per month he quoted would not change unless I upgraded service (not true) and he said if I wasn't happy, I could quit at any time (also not true). Further, he said that the terms of my agreement was for one-year (again not true).
The reality is that DirecTV will increase the rate I paid by over $25 per month in the second year. The reality is, that if I don't like that increase, I have to pay nearly $250 to get rid of DirecTV. The reality is that it was a TWO year commitment, not a one-year commitment.
Their ads sound wonderful, but almost everything on DirecTV involves an additional cost. Almost all movies involve a cost, no matter how old the movie might be. Many other programs also involve a cost, too. Want HD? I did, and yep, that costs extra. Want a DVR? I did, yep that costs extra too.
Everything I've said here is FACT. Including this: if I had it to do over, I'd forget DirecTV's fancy claims of "low cost" and go with cable. It's less expensive, and there now $250 rip off if you don't like the service.

i am an ex-employee of directv and i am hear to tell you that directv is the biggest ripoff that i know of. they will cheat you, they do train their employees to make the customer think they are getting a deal.
just because it's written in the agreement but not brought to the customers attention doesn't make it right. by all means, boycott this company.
not only does directv cheat their customers, they cheat their employees too.

It's time for us - the customer - to start demanding MORE from the companies we pay each month. It's time for us - not the company - to decide how long we will be a customer. If a company cannot allowing the customer to decide when and if they will discontinue service, then we the customer should simply boycott those companies.
It wouldn't take long to change things if we all agreed to the boycotts. An immediate stoppage of new accounts to DirecTV would very quickly get them looking at their policy of stealing our money simply because we are dissatisfied with their programming and charges.
Maybe you enjoy being told by companies that you must either do business with them or be subject to having your money stolen from you. I don't.

not so fast

regarding you agreement, the promo period is for 12 months, the agreement is for 24. that is all in the welcome letter you received (or email if you provided one at the time you ordered), the paper you signed at the point of install and on your first bill, so that way if there is any confusion, you have something in writing stating that to you. you also stated if you didn't like the price increase, you would have to pay your cancellation fee to get out, that is not the case. you can always change your package to another one. there is no company that doesn't offer a special rate for a limited time and then increase it to regular pricing afterwards.
as far as all these additional costs, every company charges you for additional services. you can't get free hd service, free dvr service, free pay per view movies or premium channels. that is just not realistic. sometimes you get promotions to get some of it free as right now new customers can get free hd service with directv if they have auto pay, but that is just a promotion. i had cable before i had my directv installed and it was $10/month for hd service and i only had 13 hd channels. you can get a directv package and get 60+ hd channels, way more if you have premier and the hd access is the same price. why get cable and pay the same price for a service and get so much less, and have worse picture quality? cable is less expensive because you get less with it. i could never go back to cable, you get what you pay for. i would rather pay a little more and get better quality. my cable was almost the same as directv and i got less for it.

I regrettably used to be one of these phone salesmen working for DirecTV's largest outsourced call center companies, PRC, LLC. Everything you're saying is 100% accurate. However the salesmen/women are trained to believe that all of this false information is actually fact. Anyone who has been working there for over a couple of months discovers the truth. Hence the high turnover rate among their employees, and hence why I am no longer one of them.
