I checked into this hotel two weeks ago when we suffered a power outage due to the extreme heat. I reserved a room at $189.00 a night. When I got there, the lobby smelled like raw sewage as a toilet in the men's room had overflowed. I tried to overlook the fact that the lobby smelled atrocious and proceeded to check into my room.

When I got off the elevator on the fourth floor, the smell of mildew greeted me. It smelled like the carpet had been wet and left a very strong musty odor. I tried to use my card key on the antiquated door device and it woudn't work. A bellman was summoned to assist me and his master key for the room would not work. He started literally running and ramming himself into the door to try and open it. Once we got inside the room, the a/c did not work until he physically beat that to start it. I was fed up by this time and checked out after only being there for 10 minutes. I refused to pay $189 to stay in a hotel that is supposed to be part of the Hilton chain with that many things wrong.

I also understand that this hotel was/is used to house a number of homeless people (they reportedly get some sort of government assistance for this). While there is nothing wrong with this, they still have no business charging $189 to basically stay in a homeless shelter with no a/c or working door locks.

Doubletree Hotel in South Ozone Park

AUTHOR: Andrea - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, May 26, 2007

It's been nearly a year since my stay at this hotel, but to follow up, I did complain to Doubletree's corporate offices. Contrary to the rebuttal by Paul who admits he has never worked in or stayed at THIS particular location, I do agree that most doubletree hotel 's are great places to stay, however, in my personal experience this was not a great place to stay.

In my complaints, both to NYC's Division of Consumer Affairs and Doubletree's corporate headquarters, I learned that this was a 'newly acquired' Doubletree property. The hotel at one point was owned by a different chain AND it was also used at that time as a temporary homeless shelter by the City of New York. What surprised me when I learned this is that the hotel would be open and doing business under the Doubletree name without rectifying some if not all of the conditions that persisted previously... like having working air conditioning in the guest rooms and making sure that the card keys work.

Doubletree is owned by Hilton. I am a member of the Hilton Honors club and have stayed in many properties under the Hilton umbrella of hotels. Based on my visit to this particular location, I can say without bias that this location did not live up to the Hilton standards. I did get an apology from Hilton/Doubletree for what I encountered that evening and was further told that they are "putting millions of dollars into the renovation of that hotel." I can understand and appreciate that, but at the time of my visit could not understand why they were open to do business on the evening that I went with the number of glaring atrocities in that hotel.

This hotel is directly across the street from JFK airport, one of the busiest airports in the world. The lobby was also full of people that evening looking to check in and some also addressed their own complaints at the front desk based on their experiences.

I have not been back to stay at this location since that evening, but can only hope that Doubletree/Hilton kept their word in "spending millions to renovate and update this particular hotel."

I dont work or have never been at the hotel in question but have worked for the doubletree.

First issue: "I checked into this hotel two weeks ago when we suffered a power outage due to the extreme heat. I reserved a room at $189.00 a night. When I got there, the lobby smelled like raw sewage as a toilet in the men's room had overflowed. I tried to overlook the fact that the lobby smelled atrocious and proceeded to check into my room."

Response: It appears as thougfh you was probably in a very bad mood before you even arrived at the doubletree hotel. Not that I blame you for being in a bad mood as I would be too as if my power went out. So you were in a bad mood and you observed a toilet overflowing. Please keep in mind that its not the fault of the hotel when a toilet overflows. When customers stuff things down it, its going to overflow. This could even happen anywhere, at your home, or even at at the White House.

Second Issue: "When I got off the elevator on the fourth floor, the smell of mildew greeted me. It smelled like the carpet had been wet and left a very strong musty odor. "
Response: Once again this is a public area and if a guest spills water in the hallway there is nothing the hotel can do but clean it up. After it is cleaned it is going to have a smell for a little while.

Third Issue: I tried to use my card key on the antiquated door device and it woudn't work. A bellman was summoned to assist me and his master key for the room would not work. He started literally running and ramming himself into the door to try and open it.

Response: I dont now hwy your key card did not work, sometimes something on the guest will demagnatize it, sometimes the front desk clerk hits the wrong room number by mistake but for whatever reason it did not work. I noticed you did complain that you had to wait for them to arrive to try to fix it so it appears as though was you told them of the problem they did what they could quickly to get you in the room.

Fourth Issue: Once we got inside the room, the a/c did not work until he physically beat that to start it.
Response: I cant Imagine a a/c starting by beating on it, he probably just adjusted the controls and turned it on. I dont know but anyhow it appears as though he did get it started. Then you state you got your money back and left. It appears as they reliazed you were not happy and probably apoligized and cheerfully refunded your money.
Summary: While of course there were a few problems that they got or was trying to get fixed im sure it was not near as bad as you made it sound. I think the doubletree got the complaint that the electric company should have gotton! I bet 5 dollars you did not even complain about the electric company on here!
