1. The information I was given was misleading. When I placed my call to reserve their services, I asked if they had big, strong men to move my belongings. The woman I spoke to their said, Oh sure, don't worry about it! You'll have two men and a 21' truck. The two men (boys) that arrived to do the job were no more than 21 years old, small in stature, and one was not even five feet tall!

I was told that I could pay with a credit card when I placed my order over the phone. Once the movers arrived, they informed me that if I paid with a credit card, they would charge me 5% in addition to the total. Then they pointed to the paperwork that said, We only accept cash.

Dr. Move advertises that they will shrink wrap all your furniture before they move it out of your home. They did not do this. They advertise that they will disconnect and reconnect anything that needs it. They did that for my washer & dryer, but said they could do nothing with the TV. For that matter, they never touched nor moved the TV.

2. They did not move all my furniture. They came to me after 3 hours and said, Our truck is full, we cannot move the rest of your furniture. Knowing that I have a 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment; how could they not have enough room? They were using a 21 foot truck. I told them they must get another truck for the rest of my belongings; I was not going to pay for another round trip. They told me there was no one to call. The one in charge had the nerve to say to me, You have too many boxes! They took the shell of five bookcases, and left all the shelves. They took the 3-part couch and left all the pillows.

3. The truck was in bad condition. After loading the truck, my neighbor noticed they had a flat tire. We had to stop at a gas station so they could put air in the tire. They were using a pickup truck to pull a box on wheels. On the highway, they were unable to drive faster than 30-40 mph.

4. They went way over their estimate. Once arriving at my apartment and surveying the contents, they estimated the entire job, round-trip would take 4 hours. In fact, it took them 7.5 hours; from 9am4:30pm.

5. They held my belongings hostage on the truck & the police came. Once we arrived at the new location; the man in charge said, You have to pay us now or we will not move your boxes and furniture in the house. I told them I would not pay until the job was done. At that point, they closed up the truck and stopped working. I asked to speak to their supervisor, but they said no one was available. I then told them that I was going to call the police to settle this matter. At that point, they got their manager on the phone, who also threatened to take my belongings to their main offices if I did not pay immediately. The police kept them from taking off with my possessions, but I did have to pay them to get it all into my new home.

6. I had to hire another moving company to move the rest of my belongings. I paid Dr. Move $557.42 with my Citibank card. I had reserved another moving company; Two Men and a Truck to move the rest of my things later that day, but Dr. Move took until 4:30pm to finish their part, and I had to cancel with Two Men and a Truck; costing me $50 on the deposit. I then hired another company called Starving Students to come the next morning, Sunday, December 17. They did a fantastic job, but it cost me $463.60. They moved almost as much as Dr. Move, and completed the job, roundtrip in 2.5 hours! Starving Students was able to drive 60 mph on the highway.

Starving Students moved the furniture in my new home that Dr. Move just set down (all in the wrong places by the way!) So I paid Starving Students to not only move the furniture that Dr. Move couldn't/wouldn't move from my old apartment, but clean up their mess as well!

Here's a list of what Dr. Move did not put on their truck & I had to pay Starving Students Movers to do for me:

Microwave
Kitchen Table and two chairs
Couch cushions
Ironing Board
Standing Lamp
56 TV and glass TV stand
4 duffle bags
2 boxes
Stereo
5 Wardrobe boxes
2 Suitcases
Standing Mirror
21 shelves that go into bookcases
Shredder
Ball chair
3 drawer filing cabinet
Office desk
3 shelf stand
Starving Students also moved a refrigerator from the garage into the kitchen too.

7. They mishandled my furniture. Dr. Move's movers dropped my entertainment center and it is chipped on the top corner. My neighbor at the old apartment saw them dragging the washer & dryer over a stone pathway; not on a dollie. All my boxes had large 8.5 x 11 printed labels (from a computer, not handwriting) that said, BATHROOM, KITCHEN, BEDROOM, etc. These were also placed on there for showing which way was up on the boxes. I discovered my boxes turned upside down and sideways.

8. Not speaking English. They played a game of not understanding me when they didn't want to do something, but they certainly spoke clear English when the police arrived! I was given no idea that I would have non-English speaking workers when I placed my order, the woman spoke English just fine.

#7 Consumer Suggestion

Too bad.

AUTHOR: Sharon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 01, 2007

Karen, I'm sorry to hear that your credit card company rescinded your refund.

I hope that the Texas DOT will see some worth in your case. I've talked with an agent there about a different mover; they are more bothered by bad movers than I am - it reflects very poorly on all the movers who work very hard to satisfy their customers.

One might hope that an in-state move can get more justice, because interstate moves almost never do. Hopefully you'll have an update to give sometime soon.

Credit Card Company Won't Help

AUTHOR: Karen - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, April 30, 2007

Here is what it said in the letter from my credit card company after they had originally removed the charge from my credit card:

"After review of your dispute, we have determined we are unable to assist you because you received the services for which you contracted. Any further attempts to resolve this dispute needs to be directed to the merchant. We now consider our investigation complete.

We previously issued a conditional credit to your account for the amount in question pending the outcome of our investigation. Now that the investigation is complete, we have rebilled your account for this charge along with any related fees and finance charges. All adjustments will appear on your statement within two billing periods.

FYI... I have filed complaints with the TXDOT, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Federal Dept of Transportation, Better Business Bureau, the state Attorney General, TheSqueakyWheel, CraigsList, The Dallas Morning News, and all the local TV stations. Nothing has resulted in any money back for me. I haven't given up the fight yet!

wrong

AUTHOR: Sharon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, April 30, 2007

"Sally" from Movex in Tampa, not New York, I'm sorry you feel angry that someone noticed you lying on the same site you're telling me to go back to. Let it go so we can concentrate on the issues at hand for this customer, then you can go back to trashing ABF, your competitor.

There is nothing illegal about this situation, I suggested the customer dispute the charges because Karen paid for a move that was not completed according to the contract. They were demanding full payment before the hourly move was completed, holding Karen's goods hostage. The Texas DOT will agree that's a problem. The police had to be involved, for Pete's sake. It's a legitimate reason to talk to the credit card company about. If the credit card sees no basis in the customer's argument, they will deny the dispute, not toss them in jail.

Your giving WRONG information Sharon

AUTHOR: Sally - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, April 30, 2007

Sharon,

You keep directing people to "dispute" charges that they AUTHORIZED to be placed on their credit cards. That's illegal and violates enough federal laws that these people who already have enough problems could be facing FEDERAL PRISION! If you, I or anyone authorize a charge to be placed on their credit card it is illegal to call your credit card company and "dispute" the charges. It requires lying.
Two wrongs don't make a right!

Stop giving you two cents. You are someone who had a bad experience in the moving industry and it's made you HATE the whole industry.

Go back to Tim Walkers Site and attack and slander the whole moving industry to your heart content! You are mis-guiding and mis- informing people who NEED fair, level headed direct.

Perhaps, you should spent some "quite time" with yourself and deal with your anger issues towards the mover who you say, mis treated you.
Stop reflecting your problems onto everyone who posts here. You don't work for this site, and you are HURTING people who need direct to help themselves.

Texas DOT

AUTHOR: Sharon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, April 29, 2007

You need to file an official complaint against Mr. Move with the Texas DOT. They DID extort you.

Did you try to dispute the charges with the credit card? Was the CC company or the movers the one that said you couldn't dispute it because you signed the receipt? Can the police that were there back you up in that you had to sign the receipt before the job was done?

Clarifying My Dr. Move Experience

AUTHOR: Karen - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, April 29, 2007

Yes, I contracted with Dr. Move to move my entire apartment for a rate of $89/hour.

Dr. Move advertises:
No additional charges for Fuel, Trip Charge, Stairs, Install/uninstall, Moving supplies, shrink wrap, pads, and truck size. The only thing they require is a 3-hour minimum.

When Dr. Move arrived at my apartment and reviewed what I had, the lead guy gave me an estimate of 4 hours total... round trip. It turned into 7+ hours at $89/hr.

I didn't need to call another moving company until Dr. Move's movers came to me after three hours and said their truck was full (with half of my possessions). Knowing how long they were taking, and realizing only half of my things were getting moved at that point; I wanted to find a different company.

That's also when they started harassing me to pay them for the entire job. I refused and said I would pay when the job was complete. That harassing went on throughout the rest of the job. I held firm until the police got involved.

Dr. Move had already said they could not get another truck out there to finish the job. I also knew at that point that they hadn't packed my things correctly into their box on wheels, and my trust in how they were handling my property was diminishing quickly.

I don't have that much stuff; it's a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, around 950 square feet.

There was no discussion about "load" or "full move." It was an agreement to pay $89/hr, regardless of any other details that come up.

I was told by the Starving Students movers that Dr. Move should have been able to put everything I own into that 20' truck if they had packed it correctly. They would know they are the ones that moved the other half of my things and re-moved what Dr. Move put in my new place.

I only mention the other two companies because of positive reasons: Two Men & A Truck were there for me; I just couldn't use them because Dr. Move used the entire day. Starving Students did a fantastic job. They showed how doing the job correctly (unlike Dr. Move) would have saved me money if I had contracted with them to start with.

Starving Students had no problem wrapping the flat screen TV, moving it on and off the truck and placing it in my home. They were big guys and they were strong, in shape, had the right kind of equipment and experience; unlike Dr. Move's two little boys sent to move me.

In hindsight, I should have just canceled the job with Dr. Move the minute I saw those two scrawny little guys arrive. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find anyone else that day... especially on a Saturday to move me. So I went ahead and used them.

The police could not force Dr. Move to do anything, even though they understood that my belongings were being held hostage. The police suggested I pay to end the stand-off, and get my things in the house.

I tried to dispute the charges with my credit card company, but they said that because I signed the contract, I was responsible to pay it. I disagree, because I wasn't going to get my possessions UNLESS the credit card receipt and the contract were signed. That's extortion in my book!

It's been a tough lesson to learn. I still hope to take this to small claims court or find some way to get compensation.

Was the contract for a load or full move?

AUTHOR: Edward - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, April 29, 2007

It seems that you have legitimate issues that you can pursue. There are some issues that are confusing. If you had a written contract, that stated your entire household possessions would be moved by Dr. Move, why would you have had 2 Men and a Truck, already reserved for additional moving later on that day?

You also state that Starving Students moved almost as much as Dr. Move. That would be saying that you needed a 40ft plus tractor trailer for an apartment move. That is a huge amount of belongings. If that is what the contract was for, then Dr. Move needed to finish the job. Why didn't you make them finish the job? Was the contract for just a full load? Since you had to pay Starving Students nearly the same amount for a slightly smaller load, it sounds like you were paying per load, not for the entire move.

If they did physical damage to your belongings, then you should make a claim against them. I do not understand why you list the business information of 2 Men a Truck in you ROR if they did nothing wrong. Unless it was the $50.00 deposit you had to give them because you cancelled their services. You had already agreed to that, thus no rip-off there.

If the pay was for a load, Dr. Move shorted themselves by taking so long. As for moving the 52" TV. Many moving companies will not move large flat screens. If that is the kind you have. If the contract was for an entire move and they only did half of a move and refused to do anymore, why didn't you stop the charge transaction? When the police came, you could have shown the police the contract as well as shown that they were holding the furniture hostage. The police could not have made them do another load but would have made them unload and not force a payment from you. Good luck to you in your new place.
